December 31st, 2009Tot to Go – Sling – CLOSED

tot-to-go-logo

A sling is something that I just can not live without!  It is so easy to carry around my daughter either at home, while shopping, or just going for a walk.  I am always on the look out for great new carriers to carry around my little munchkin.  I recently received a sling from Tot to Go for review.  Tot to Go was created by Mom,  Shani Sam, in Vancouver, BC.  Like many Momprenures, she started her own company after searching high and low for a carrier that actually fit.

Genevieve is now over 25 pounds, so after carrying her around all day in my arms, I could end up with one arm that seems to be more muscular than the other (not always a good look when the other arm is a little flabby – I’ll be working on this  in 2010).  I have recently been wearing her in my  Tot to Go sling, which makes things for both myself and her so much easier.  I simply have to put the sling over my head with one arm through, and then stick her inside the sling.  Both arms are free to do whatever around the house, and she is happy just to be close to me.  The Mocha Cappuccino sling is reversible, one side is chocolate brown and the other has modern dots in brown white and gray.  The sling is very sturdy and had a French stitched seem (a double stitch inside and out) to make sure your little bundle of joy will be safe.

There are many ways to carry your little one in the Tot to Go sling. My favourite way with a toddler is hip carry.  However,  you can also carry smaller babies facing outward like a little kangaroo or they can lay completely in the sling and fall fast asleep (this was one of my favourite ways to carry my little one when she was just a baby).

A sling has been a life saver for me.  Genevieve was a crier and only seemed to be happy when she was close by.  She had acid reflux which is very painful, and although being carried doesn’t make the pain go away, it really helps to be close to Mommy when not feeling well.  If you have a fussy baby put them in the Tot to Go sling and it will help both you and the child.  You will be able to keep your sanity and the baby will be glad to be close to you.

Tot to Go also sells modern nursing covers and fluffy baby quilts.  All the items are very reasonably priced, only $19.95 for a Nursing cover, $39.95 for a sling and $39.95  for a quilt.

Christmas Gift Idea for parents with babies/infants/toddlers, or Christmas Gift idea for the expecting parents

I am a huge baby wearing fan.  Even though Genevieve is over 1, I still wear her all the time.   The newest carrier I received, is the ERGObaby – and we all love it.  ERGObaby Carriers have only been in business since 2003, but they are easily the most popular carriers on the market today.  So popular in fact that counterfeit carriers are being sold on Ebay, so make sure to get your carriers from a trusted source.

_mg_2588For review,  ERGObaby sent us a carrier, a backpack and the front pouch all in the colour Camel.  The Ergo can be worn in three positions, front carry facing in back carry facing in, and hip carry.  This is by far my favourite carrier for the back carry.  Genevieve is nearly 25 pounds, and can get heavy while carrying her on my hip. I find that putting her on my back is just so easy, the weight is disbursed around my hips and chest.  There are two adjustable straps which helps with weight distribution, and also allows any shape and size wear the ERGO.   The lower strap, which goes around the waist is very thick and is adjustable from 25″ – 43″, and the upper strap clips at the chest keeps the shoulder straps in place, both these mechanisms help lighten the load.  My husband and I both put Genevieve in the ERGO, it’s quick, easy and it works.  The Ergo fits people 5′ – 6′5″ tall.

With the back carry, Genevieve can see over my shoulder, which makes her happy.  She is a type of child that likes to see everything that is going on.  It is only recently that we started carrying her on our backs – ERGObaby recommends the back position for babies around 6 months and older – we started around age 1.  We use this carrier every time we go out, even if it is just for a few minutes.  We find it easier to put her in the carrier – which just takes less than a minute, than to carry her around on my hip for a minute or two.  The carrier is a little bit larger than a sling, so we leave it in the car so it is always ready to be used. The ERGO also has a little pouch in the front to keep things like a few diapers and wipes, which means we don’t have to carry around a huge diaper bag if we go out for just a short trip.

Many children like the soothing motion while being carried, and it often puts them to sleep.  ERGObaby has come up with a little hood which can be clipped onto the shoulder straps.  The hood will keep their neck and head from flapping around.  This is especially great for smaller babies which do not have much neck control.  The hood will give them the extra neck support that is needed.  I also like to use the hood when I am trying to get Genevieve to sleep, it covers her eyes, and eliminates any visual simulations which may keep her up.  Sometimes she doesn’t want to keep the hood on, but other times, she is happy to leave it up and will fall asleep instantly.

The backpack is a great addition to the ERGObaby.  The straps are adjustable, which makes it fit perfectly right over the front side of the carrier. There are also snaps that can clip right onto the shoulder straps.  The backpack is large enough to bring all the necessities for a long day trip.  The bag also has front pouches for carrying bottles. The bottles will remain upright and not spill.  Since it is a backpack style diaper bag, my husband will even put it on his back without wearing the carrier.  There is a zipper on the top and the side which makes grabbing things easy.

The front pouch is a little pack that a wallet, passport, or other important documents can be placed in and easily accessible.  It attaches by velcro to the waist band, or there is a strap that can be used to carry the pouch over the shoulders.  This makes your important information easy to grab, and keeps it close to your person at all times.  There is no need to worry about where your documents are.

The ERGObaby Carrier, and accessories are great.  My husband loves to Geocache, and he will be using this regularly while out hunting for caches.  The ERGObaby is great for people that love the outdoors and go hiking, or that like to spend time in the mall.  I am a person that just likes to have my baby close to me, and I wear her as much as possible, just going for a walk down the street, or spending an afternoon at the market, I use the ERGO.

I really appreciate a good company name.  It’s hard to come up with something that is clever, witty, but still simple enough for people to know what your business is.  One of the best company names I have come across so far is “Hug Of Joy”.  Hug Of Joy specializes in custom made slings, and the designer behind it all? You guessed it – Joy Nolette!  Isn’t that clever?  I just love it, another thing to love about Hug Of Joy is – it’s made in Canada!

hugofjoy2Hug Of Joy makes customized slings for each and every person.  Before receiving my Hug Of Joy sling, I had to give Joy my exact measurements so she could make sure that the sling I received would be perfect for me and Genevieve.  I had to measure from my shoulder across my back to my opposite side. To find out the exact spot on my side where I had to measure to, I had to bend over (like I was doing I’m a little tea pot), and stick my finger in that spot.  I had my husband help me measure, and we did it 3 times, just to make sure our measurements were right.  Once I found out how many inches it was, I went to the Hug Of Joy sizing chart to get my size.  Because of my chest size, I had to go up one size.  I’m short at only 5′2″, and usually wear a Med or Large top, but only because of my chest.  I gave all this info to Joy before hand so she could make a sling that would fit me perfectly. To get your measurement Simply Visit the “Shop” at Hug Of Joy and follow Measuring Instructions to fill out the Order form with all your pertinent information – couldn’t be easier.

Once I received my Hug Of Joy and put it on, I could see why the perfect fitting was necessary.  I have other slings, and they fit me as well, but I usually have to turn the shoulders over to get a tight fit.  With my Hug Of Joy there is no need to flip any material over my shoulder, it’s always the right size, and Genevieve is as snug as a bug in a Hug Of Joy.

The Hug Of Joy is made out of a hypoallergenic material, that is blended with crab and shrimp shells, which gives this fabric its remarkable properties: naturally hypoallergenic, non-toxic, antibacterial, odor resistant, breathable, moisture wicking and biodegradable.  It also has a bit of a stretch to it,but it has not stretch out as it has a memory and springs back to it’s shape when Genevieve is taken out.  My Sling is brown and pink reversible – our favourite colour combo.   There is a little blue Size Tag on my Hug Of Joy which is at the exact spot where my shoulder is suppose to be, this marker helps me make sure I have the sling in the right place. There is also a Hug Of Joy logo in thehugofjoy3gif very front.  Genevieve sits perfectly on my hip as if I was carrying her without a sling on.  The great thing is, I have 2 free hands to do whatever I want.  I can carry her on my hip, or kangaroo style (her favourite) cradle positions, and when she is a little bit older I will be able to carry her on my back (there are 9 different holds in total).  It’s very easy to bend over and do everyday chores with Genevieve in the Hug Of Joy sling. I can carry her around for a generous amount of time, and she will be happy.  Although she is getting a bit older now and wants to be on the go a little more. I miss the days when I could carry her around the house all day.  I have washed this, and it did not shrink.  It fits as good as the first time I tried it on. The Hug Of Joy can be used for newborn babies right up until they are 30 pounds or about 3 years old.

The Hug Of Joy sling is very easy to put on, and is a very easy to fold up into a small package.  I am able to bring it with me in my diaper bag in case of an emergency. Baby wearing promotes healthy development and keeps your child happier.  A happy child means a happy mother.  I am a very big baby wearing supporter, because I know it is health for Genevieve and for me too.

If you are looking for a customized baby sling, that will fit your perfectly, contact Hug Of Joy, Joy will make sure that the sling you order will be the sling for you.

I’m a majoy baby wearing fan, Genevieve is too.  Sometimes when nothing else works all she needs to be is close to her Mommy or Daddy.  I thought I had tried all the carriers that were out there, until I came across the wrap style carrier.  Not only do these looks really comfortable (for the baby) and stylish, but they are also comfortable for the person doing the wearing as well.

039Sugar Sweet Baby, specializes in wrap style carriers, bows and children’s gifts, Sugar Sweet Baby sent me a super fashionable bamboo wrap (it has to be fashionable, it’s from New York!)  The packing was very eco-friendly and had no extra packaging to throw out (except the mailing box).  The wrap is a little overwhelming at first, because that material was so long.  The wrap looked very nice, and in the very middle of the material, there is a nice Black and pink flowered print which helps me know where the middle of the wrap is, so I can get it on right.  This is the part that will be in the front.  The material is a very soft and a stretchy cotton, much like a t-shirt would be.  I’m quite surprised this is organic!  Organic material can be very soft and stretchy too.

sugarsweetbaby3

Rather than printing directions to fill up our landfills, Sugar Sweet Baby has a video and PDF version of the directions on their website.  What a very smart idea.   It’s actually very easy and makes a lot of sense once you see someone put it on for the first time.  After a few more times of practicing, you really start to get a good feeling for the wrap and take good care at making sure the material isn’t bunched up around the shoulders and back.  The criss crossing around the back can make the material twirl up, so I try to put on one shoulder at a time to make sure it’s all straightened out, this really helps when you go to actually wear your baby.

sugarsweetbaby21Once I have the Sugar Sweet Baby wrap on, I can place Genevieve in a few directions, facing in, facing out and when she is older, I can put her on my back.  For now, I just carry her in the front.  I was so surprised how light Genevieve felt.  It was amazing.  I think it’s because the super wide straps around the shoulders and back really distribute all her weight throughout my body and hips.  I can go for long walks with Genevieve in the Sugar Sweet Baby wrap, and not only is she happy, but we both look really nice too.  I can bend all the way over and touch my toes with this wrap and there is no way she is going to fall out.  I wrap the material around my body as tightly as I can, so when she’s placed inside shes very snug.  I get a lot of comments about this wrap, many people have seen slings before, but the wrap style is still new to people around my area.  I get stopped on the street with people asking me about the wrap, and they tell me that we both look very comfortable and stylish together.

What I also like about this style is that it truly can fit any size, you only need one Sugar Sweet Baby and anyone in your family will be able to wear you child.  The material is lengthy enough to accommodate big sizes or if you are very small, you just need to wrap the tails around your hips one more time.

If you are looking for an easy way to carry your baby around and still be able to do all your housework, the Sugar Sweet Baby will allow you to live your life as if you were not even carrying a baby.  We all know the hip carry which our mothers did (and probably put their backs out doing) this type of carry is no longer needed.  You will find that the Sugar Sweet Baby wrap is way more comfortable, and you will barely even know that you have a baby with you.  I was so impressed with how a long piece of material could make baby wearing so easy.

I’m a baby wearing fan!  It promotes closeness and is suppose to help sooth your baby and be beneficial for their development.  What’s not to like about all those positive aspects?  I also like that I can wear Genevieve around the house and get some things done while I’m at it.  Genevieve is a pretty fussy little girl, she likes to be close at all times, and sometimes it just seems impossible to get a days work in with her constantly attached to my hip.  Well, there is a solution to this, and it’s baby wearing.  With my hands free, I can get done pretty much anything I want to while she is happy just to be close and touching me.  This way – we are both happy!

I have tried a few types of carriers so far, a pocket carrier and a Baby Trekker, both of which I (and Genevieve) enjoy very much.  I am just as excited to tell you all about the new ring sling I received from Rockin’ Baby Slings!  The sling that I received from Rockin’ Baby Slings is the most beautiful blue and brown pattern called “This Lullaby”.

Natasha and Lisa are the creators of this very fashionable sling, they, like many of us stylish mommies wanted to be able to get everything done in the run of a day, and found that it was easier while having a baby in a sling.  There was just a small problem, there was nothing in 2002 that was quite fashionable enough for the friends to wear, so together they got some hip fabrics, and voila the Rockin’ Baby Slings was invented.

rockinbaby1

I was surprised by all the detailed work that went into this sling.  I thought it would just be one long piece of material with 2 rings on it, but it actually has a lot of fine detail work.  The section around the rings is folded and sewn accordion style so it has quite a bit of material in one spot and makes for some padding along the shoulder, and comes with a little pouch at the bottom to hold things like diapers if you don’t want to carry a diaper bag around.   The whole entire sling is reversible as well, the other side of the material is a beautiful chocolate brown.  This side also has a little pouch to carry things.  So as you can see this is a very versatile sling, it’s reversible, has 2 pouches, and they are extremely stylish (isn’t this the most important part?!?)

I was very glad that the sling came with instructions, which are very straight forward.  It took about 2 or 3 times to get used to how to put it on, and then it was a piece of cake.  Hold the rings with my left thumb, wrap the sling around my back and under my left arm and put the fabric up through both rings and back down just through one ring, and my sling was ready to go.

I find that the positioning of the rings makes a huge difference in comfort with the ring slings.  If you are having a problem with comfort, it probably means that your sling is not on properly.  If the rings are too high it will start to hurt and cut into my neck, and if they are too low, Genevieve will be falling over and will feel very heavy.  The rings have a few inches of wiggle room up and down where it feels the best to carry Genevieve.  Once I get the right spot, I can carry her for a long time.

The great thing about a ring sling is that it truly can fit anyone.  We are all built differently, and because the sling has a generous amount of fabric, there is no person too big or small that will be able to do baby wearing with this Rockin’ Baby Slings.  I also like how I can pull along the top and bottom parts of the fabric to bring Genevieve closer to me.  Pulling the top part of the fabric (where the pouch is) tighter through the rings will make her head come closer to me and pulling the bottom part will make her bum go higher up.  It’s just as easy to loosen the sling if Genevieve feels constricted and is too tight.

rockinbaby2

I can carry Genevieve in a number of different positions with this sling, she loves Kangaroo style, and it is very easy to put her in facing outwards with her legs crossed.  I can also put her on my hip, and because of the ability to  tighten the material, I can make sure that she is directly on my hip where it feels most comfortable.  When Genevieve is older there will also be the option to put her on my back.  This is only recommended for babies older than 1.  I believe this sling can hold up to 35 pounds, so it can be used until children are at least 3 years of age.

What I love most about this sling is how fashionable it is!  I can not leave my front door without compliments from the neighbours, and at the mall I am stopped by strangers left right and center.  This has to be the thing that I get the most compliments on that I own.  Everyone wants to know where I got my sling, and they tell me how amazing we both look in it!  I can see why celebrities like like Angelina Joile, Gwen Stefani, like to be seen in their Rockin’ Baby Slings.

The sling, although quite a bit of material is compact enough to fold down and put into a diaper bag, just in case you are in need of a fashionista emergencies – eeerrr or I mean a crying baby emergency!  A sling always seems to sooth my daughter so I always make sure I have one close by.

Giveaway is closed, but please write a review if you have a Baby Trekker!

The Baby Trekker is one of a kind! I was so excited to receive my beautiful package from Judy at Baby Trekker.  She is the owner of this great product. The whole package even came with it’s own “green” Baby Trekker bag created by her niece.  After a month of using the Baby Trekker, I decided to sell my other expensive carrier that everyone knows (the one that only faces inward) because my husband and I like the Trekker a lot better.

Upon receiving my package I saw on the instruction booklet “no it’s not an octopus” and as soon as I pulled the Trekker up, I could see why. I thought it was very clever and pretty cute. The long straps and the D rings make it look like long octopus tentacles with little suction cups. However, that is what makes this carrier so versatile and usable for everyone. Unlike some other carriers That you need to pick a size, the regular size can fit everyone. Which is great because how many of us are the same size as our husband, or anyone else who might be doing some baby wearing?

If you have a fussy or colicky baby, you really need to get this. My baby had some major gas problems, up until 5 months. She needed to be held and bounced all day and night. It seemed to be the only thing that will help her feel good. After a few hours of holding her each day, she starts to get a little heavy. The Baby Trekker has helped my husband and I a lot with her. I can simply strap her in and bounce and she will fall asleep almost instantly. It has been a life saver so far. I’m actually bouncing her in the Trekker as I write this review.

I currently only put baby in the front position facing in or out.  Our baby likes to see everything that is going on, so when we take her places, she likes to face out to watch everything.  It’s great because she usually will fall asleep looking around.  My previous carrier only faced in and baby would get frustrated because she wanted to know what was happening around her and couldn’t see.

At first it was a tad confusing to figure out how to put her into the Trekker, but after reading the instructions, and practicing with a teddy bear, I figured it out. The best way to learn how to use the Baby Trekker, is to watch the instructional video. It is very helpful. But when you get a new “toy” you want to use it right away and not waste your time watching a video. Please take it from me, watch the video it is worth it!  When first learning to use the Baby Trekker It is easier to get the straps clipped in with a 2nd person, but after a few tries, you will be able to do it alone.

This carrier has 5 positions:

1. Front – facing out
2. Front – facing in
3. Back – facing out
4. Back – facing in
5. Nursing!

I don’t think any other carriers allow for all these positions.

The nursing position does work. All you have to do is loosen one of the straps and then you can position the baby to latch on. It’s pretty easy. My baby only likes to be laying down while eating and she was able to latch on in the carrier.

The Baby Trekker wraps around your waist and not your hips, which really helps with carrying your baby’s weight. The straps also criss cross on your back, which is another back saver. Between my husband and I we can have her in her for quite a few hours each day, she is comfortable, and so are we. We can also get some housework done since both hands are free.  My husband holds her in the Baby Trekker and plays his PlayStation as she sleeps.

This is also great for going to the mall, hiking or just out for a walk. I find our stroller is so bulky and difficult to maneuver around, especially while shopping during the holidays in packed full malls. The Baby Trekker is an easy way to get around the mall really quickly and you don’t have to wait for the elevator.

The little pouch in the front of the carrier is just big enough for a diaper, and there is also a little bib included. Many babies like to suck on the carrier in the front facing position, the baby will suck on the bib instead of the carrier which will prolong the beautiful shape and look of the carrier. The bib also can act as a neck support if the baby falls asleep.

Either as a gift or to purchase for yourself, this baby carrier is well worth it. I would suggest getting this as soon as your baby is born so they can be used to it. Baby wearing is suppose to be very good for children’s development and helps them feel safe and secure. You can have your baby in the Trekker until they are 40 pounds, so your investment will last a few years and it is sturdy enough to go through more than 2 children. My colicky baby really enjoys being held and if it were not for the Baby Trekker, my life would be very hard.

Do yourself a favour, don’t bother with that other carrier that only faces inwards, get the Baby Trekker instead!  You and baby will both be a lot happier with it.
