If you are looking for a store that is 100% eco-friendly, My Baby’s Green is the place to shop.  All (and I repeat) ALL the items are organic and eco-friendly.  If a product is on My Baby’s Green website, you can be sure that it’s going to meet your environmentally friendly standards, because Tina has done all the homework for you.

I received a “green” push along duck for review.  The duck itself is yellow, but it’s green because it’s a wooden toy and the packaging it was sent in was all reused – packing and box too.  This cute little push a long duck is kind of the same idea as the famous popcorn popper, but way cuter.  When we first received the duck we brought it to grandpa’s house.   It was the perfect toy to bring with us there, because grandpa doesn’t really have any toys at his house.  My  daughter and father pushed the duck around the house and laughed for our whole stay (over 2 hours).  At first the duck was pretty stiff and my daughter was having a hard time pushing him around, but after sometime, she got it and the duck loosened up, making it easier to push.

Like the classic popcorn popper, the duck also makes noise, but instead of a simple popping noise the duck squeaks.  Each foot has a squeaker, and as they roll along the floor they squeak.  The faster the duck is pushed, the quicker the duck “quacks”.  My daughter absolutely loves it when we push the duck around the floor really fast and move it at the last minute missing her toes.  The giggles and screams that come out of her are priceless.

I’m sure that many people may think that eco-friendly/organic/wooden toys can’t possibly be fun, but the Push Along Duck has proven to be a source of pure pleasure and entertainment for my 20 month old.  Imagine that – a wooden toy being that fun!  Eco-friendly and organic has come a long way.

This is just the beginning of the eco-friendly products that you can find at My Baby’s Green.  They carry clothing, shoes, feeding products, gift packs for new moms & babies, and their eco-friendly line is growing everyday.

Green Beaver is the creation of Canadian husband and wife team Karen and Alain.  Both with science degrees and probably having more knowledge than the average Joe about what chemicals are in the products we use, they decided to create their own green products when they had a child of their own.  Green Beaver carries hair products, creams, lip balms, toothpastes and even has a fun line for the little environmentalists as well.

For review, I received a hand and body lotion in Apple Mint.  The ingredients are all “wild, organic and Canadian”, and include things like water (the very first ingredient), sunflower seed oil, apple juice, peppermint oil, carrot, and grapefruit, just to name a few.  I am surprised how many of the ingredients I actually know, although I don’t know the scientific names, each item has the common name in parenthesis.  Despite having all these common items as the ingredients, the lotion is white, smooth and not oily.

My favourite part of the cream is the smell.  It smells mostly like a very light mint with a bit of a sweetness – I think that’s the apple.  The scent is not strong, I would be able to wear this at work which is scent free.  The only time it smells is when it is first put on the skin and then if I continue to smell my hands. For an all natural and eco-friendly lotion, I really enjoy Green Beaver’s Apple Mint.  I like that it is chemical free, is safe to use on my daughter, it feels and looks the same as any other cream and it’s Canadian.

I also received a very nice lip shimmer in Amour.  This lip shimmer isn’t just all natural, it goes one step further and is in fact vegan.  Ingredients include sunflower seed oil, Canola oil, a few different waxes and carrot seed oil to name a few.  I don’t recognize as many of the all natural ingredients in the lip shimmer as I do in the cream.  I do however, love the smell – I can’t even put a finger (or nose) on what the scent is, but it is absolutely delicious and not at all over powering.  The Green Beaver lip shimmer also has the slightest hint of a nice light redish/pink colour.  Just enough to be able to tell that there is something on my lips.  The lip shimmer comes in a sleek tube like any lip balm/chap/shimmer that we see commercially.

Overall, I enjoy the Green Beaver products that I have received.  Despite being green, all natural and vegan, these products look and feel like any product that we see in commercial stores.  This would make the change over to all natural really easy for anyone using similar products which have harmful chemicals for you, your kids, and the environment.

It seems that my daughter has inherited my sensitive skin.  I have used a number of soaps and creams on her body, some have been excellent and left her skin nice and soft while others have really dried out her skin leaving it rough and probably very itchy.  One company’s products that we have been testing out for over a month now is Purgood.

I have used the body wash and shampoo combo on my daughter nearly every night at tub time.  This wash is all natural and has a beautiful calming light scent of lavender.  Lavender is suppose to help sooth the soul, so it’s the perfect thing to smell right before bedtime.  I catch myself sniffing my daughters hair while I rock her to sleep, it just smells so lovely.  The scent isn’t over powering, it is very light.  The wash bubbles up nice and can be used all over her body and hair, so there is no need for two different cleaners, one bottle does it all.  The wash has not dried out my daughters skin at all.  I have found that if something is going to dry out her skin, it will happen with the first use, and we have used this one at least 30 times.  And a little goes a long way.  The bottle is 8oz, and it looks like I haven’t used it too often.

The body lotion, which comes in an 8 oz  pump style bottle, is also all natural, and this one is completely not scented.  I usually like a little hint of scent in a cream once in a while, but when you put this on your skin, there is no scent at all.  I’ve been putting my nose right up to the lotion to try to get a whiff of something, and there is the slightest hint of something, but overall, I would call this one scentless.  This is great for anyone who is sensitive to smells.  I haven’t used the lotion as often as the wash (because my daughter’s skin has improved immensy since using the Purgood products, and I have no need to hydrate her skin).  However, I have used it and I find that it isn’t greasy and makes my hands and body nice and smooth.

I love using all natural products on my daughter.  It makes me feel good to know that the products she is using are not harmful to her, or the world she lives in.  She also occasionally drinks the tub water (to my dismay), and I would rather have her drink something all natural than any chemicals.

Overall, I am very pleased with the products that we received from Purgood, the all natural products are safe and gentle on my daughter.

Burt’s Bees is a product that nearly every household should already be aware of.  Their products are 100% all natural, not tested on animals, and they even use 100% recycled materials for packing their products.  On top of taking care of our environmental world, they are also socially responsible and are taking care of our economic world as well, by giving back 10% of their sales to such programs like Habitat to Humanity.  With a CV like Burt’s Bees it’s no wonder they win numerous awards each year, and are popping up everywhere on local store shelves.

For review, I received a number of products from Burt’s Bees.  Including a lip balm, which comes in a little tin, and is made with coconut & sweet almond oils, peppermint and rosemary.  The lip balm is pure and simple, it smells like peppermint and leaves a cool tingle on my lips after each use.  I also received a lip shimmer, which is “The World’s Best Lip Blam, with a Hint of Luminescent Colour”.  I would say that it leaves more than just a hint of colour, it’s not quite as thick and bright as a lip stick, but there is no doubt that it gives my lips a nice tint. I’ve actually purchased this lip shimmer in the past.  There are plenty of colours to choose from as well.

My favourite products that I was sent for review from Burt’s Bees is the shampoo & conditioner.  I received the volumlizing pomegranate and soy shampoo.  I’m not sure how the people at Burt’s Bees knew that my hair is a limp as a cooked piece of spaghetti and very thin, so I was more than pleased and excited to test out the product.  The shampoo has a different feel to it than commercial shampoos -it’s not as jelly, it’s a little more watery.  Another difference is that it is not as sudsy as other shampoos I have used.  I think companies have led us to believe that bubbles = cleaning, but you should know, it is not the case at all.   The conditioner I received is called More Moisture Raspberry & Brazil Nut Conditioner, and it took me only a tiny squirt to condition my whole head.  Now, onto the really good stuff – I really feel like this fluffed up my hair, any fluff is an improvement and the conditioner left my hair silky smooth.

I also received the Naturally Ageless Intensive Repairing Serum for review.  Now, just pushing 30, I don’t have any wrinkles yet to test this out on, but my Mom tried it,  and so far, she really likes the cream, and is hoping that she will see a positive change in her few wrinkles that she has (Please God, I ask that I am blessed with my Mother’s beautiful skin).  It seems to have made a difference in the one wrinkle she hates the most beneath her lip on her chin.  I can not really see the difference, but if it makes her happy, that is all that matters to me.  With ingredients such as pomegranate, which in a previous post I mentioned all the positive benefits, so it would make sense that if drinking pomegranate is beneficial, then putting it on your face should be too.

We are all Burt’s Bees fans in my house, their all natural products are not limited on quality.  Many times people think all natural and eco-friendly mean granola and birkenstocks, but Burt’s Bees products are proof that all natural products can work for anyone.

Babies are an aromatic lot.  I had anticipated the smelly, poopy diapers and the ground up food stuck to every surface of my home and child but I was a bit surprised at the perseverance of some baby odours.  Take for example the cloth diapers we use; they hold on to a smell like a tree takes root in the ground.  I tried using tea tree oil in my washes and although that does help, it is not particularly helpful when my daughter is teething and her diapers take on a stench that makes me want to put her out on the clothesline.

I considered resorting to using a commercial laundry detergent to combat the smell, but since receiving EcoStore’s Laundry Detergent and Baby Shampoo for review, I have been saved from that choice.  Originating in New Zealand, EcoStore has been carefully crafting their safe home cleaning and beauty products for over ten years.  They pride themselves on their “no nasty chemicals” promise; this means: no toxic petrochemicals, no synthetic enzymes, no optical whiteners, no synthetic perfumes or dyes, no sodium lauryl sulphates, no phosphates, no chlorine, no ammonia, no parabens, no propylene glycol, no TEA, DEA or MEA.  If you are wondering why these ingredients are not used by EcoStore, you can check out their website at www.ecostoreusa.com for more information (this is a great resource, by the way).

When I first used the EcoStore Laundry Detergent, I was hurriedly stuffing my laundry in the washer.  I began squirting the bottle and was instantly annoyed that the dispensing hole was very, very small and that the detergent was not coming out fast enough for my impatient schedule.  After cursing for a minute and emptying about a quarter of a cup into my washer, I began to wonder why the hole was as small as it is.  And then I stopped squirting and decided to read the directions.  Oops!  Apparently, you only need between a tablespoon and a half to three tablespoons for a full load of wash.  (Note to self: READ THE DIRECTIONS BEFORE USE).  So, a bottle ofEcoStore Laundry Detergent will go a long way, which is better for the environment and your pocketbook.  The detergent contains a bit of eucalyptus and my daughter’s stinky diaper problem seems to be solved!

The Baby Shampoo from ecostore is wonderfully gentle and even though we are a family of sensitive noses, nobody reacted to the light eucalyptus and citrusy smell.  EcoStore carries over one hundred products, which includes ear wash shampoo, shampoo, conditioner and hypoallergenic shampoo for your pets!

October 17th, 2009Playwell Enterprises Ltd

We were surprised as how much and how soon we have had to baby proof our house, our behavior has changes as well as our surroundings. We don’t leave sharp objects on the couch, hot drinks stay in the kitchen, we have put things up high, we have blocked our staircase and we use chemical free cleaners but we will still need to block off all of our cupboards because at 8 months old our son puts everything in his mouth. I mean everything; he loves to play with the remote, the phone and anything else he can wrap his chubby little hands around.

Because of this we do our best to find the most “mouth friendly” toys which will enhance his development and he will enjoy. I received for review the “dancing alligator” made by Plan Toys from Playwell Enterprises Ltd. The “dancing alligator” is a little wooden pull toy. It is a bright grass green with 4 wooden yellow wheels. As you pull the “dancing alligator” along, it makes a clakety- clack noise and we adore it. Hudson has figured out that he can pull it along while playing with it, he enjoys the sounds and he inevitably puts the alligator in his mouth. We are okay with the alligator going in his mouth as  Plan Toys is a green company; they meet and have exceeded many of the industry standards. Plan Toys was the first toy company to make toys  from clean natural rubber wood from rubber trees which no longer produce latex. The trees grow to heights of 50 feet or more. The sap from the rubberwood tree is the world’s primary source of natural rubber. After about 25 years, the latex yield decreases and the trees are usually cut down and burned. Instead, Plan Toys uses them for their toy production. A great example of reducing and re-using. They are also considered clean because they do not use fertilizer for three years prior to the tree being cut. The glue and the paint are non-toxic; great for those little mouths which you know the toys will end up in. Additionally, the paper used in our packaging is recyclable which further reduces waste and the Plan Toys plants use state of the art solar energy.

Plan Toys set out on a mission to create toys to inspire your child’s imagination and promote their physical and intellectual development while being an environmentally and  socially responsible company. Plan Toys have succeed with both of these objectives. Plan Toys has  founded a community learning center and The Children’s Toy Museum.
