Babies are an aromatic lot.  I had anticipated the smelly, poopy diapers and the ground up food stuck to every surface of my home and child but I was a bit surprised at the perseverance of some baby odours.  Take for example the cloth diapers we use; they hold on to a smell like a tree takes root in the ground.  I tried using tea tree oil in my washes and although that does help, it is not particularly helpful when my daughter is teething and her diapers take on a stench that makes me want to put her out on the clothesline.

I considered resorting to using a commercial laundry detergent to combat the smell, but since receiving EcoStore’s Laundry Detergent and Baby Shampoo for review, I have been saved from that choice.  Originating in New Zealand, EcoStore has been carefully crafting their safe home cleaning and beauty products for over ten years.  They pride themselves on their “no nasty chemicals” promise; this means: no toxic petrochemicals, no synthetic enzymes, no optical whiteners, no synthetic perfumes or dyes, no sodium lauryl sulphates, no phosphates, no chlorine, no ammonia, no parabens, no propylene glycol, no TEA, DEA or MEA.  If you are wondering why these ingredients are not used by EcoStore, you can check out their website at www.ecostoreusa.com for more information (this is a great resource, by the way).

When I first used the EcoStore Laundry Detergent, I was hurriedly stuffing my laundry in the washer.  I began squirting the bottle and was instantly annoyed that the dispensing hole was very, very small and that the detergent was not coming out fast enough for my impatient schedule.  After cursing for a minute and emptying about a quarter of a cup into my washer, I began to wonder why the hole was as small as it is.  And then I stopped squirting and decided to read the directions.  Oops!  Apparently, you only need between a tablespoon and a half to three tablespoons for a full load of wash.  (Note to self: READ THE DIRECTIONS BEFORE USE).  So, a bottle ofEcoStore Laundry Detergent will go a long way, which is better for the environment and your pocketbook.  The detergent contains a bit of eucalyptus and my daughter’s stinky diaper problem seems to be solved!

The Baby Shampoo from ecostore is wonderfully gentle and even though we are a family of sensitive noses, nobody reacted to the light eucalyptus and citrusy smell.  EcoStore carries over one hundred products, which includes ear wash shampoo, shampoo, conditioner and hypoallergenic shampoo for your pets!

October 17th, 2009Playwell Enterprises Ltd

We were surprised as how much and how soon we have had to baby proof our house, our behavior has changes as well as our surroundings. We don’t leave sharp objects on the couch, hot drinks stay in the kitchen, we have put things up high, we have blocked our staircase and we use chemical free cleaners but we will still need to block off all of our cupboards because at 8 months old our son puts everything in his mouth. I mean everything; he loves to play with the remote, the phone and anything else he can wrap his chubby little hands around.

Because of this we do our best to find the most “mouth friendly” toys which will enhance his development and he will enjoy. I received for review the “dancing alligator” made by Plan Toys from Playwell Enterprises Ltd. The “dancing alligator” is a little wooden pull toy. It is a bright grass green with 4 wooden yellow wheels. As you pull the “dancing alligator” along, it makes a clakety- clack noise and we adore it. Hudson has figured out that he can pull it along while playing with it, he enjoys the sounds and he inevitably puts the alligator in his mouth. We are okay with the alligator going in his mouth as  Plan Toys is a green company; they meet and have exceeded many of the industry standards. Plan Toys was the first toy company to make toys  from clean natural rubber wood from rubber trees which no longer produce latex. The trees grow to heights of 50 feet or more. The sap from the rubberwood tree is the world’s primary source of natural rubber. After about 25 years, the latex yield decreases and the trees are usually cut down and burned. Instead, Plan Toys uses them for their toy production. A great example of reducing and re-using. They are also considered clean because they do not use fertilizer for three years prior to the tree being cut. The glue and the paint are non-toxic; great for those little mouths which you know the toys will end up in. Additionally, the paper used in our packaging is recyclable which further reduces waste and the Plan Toys plants use state of the art solar energy.

Plan Toys set out on a mission to create toys to inspire your child’s imagination and promote their physical and intellectual development while being an environmentally and  socially responsible company. Plan Toys have succeed with both of these objectives. Plan Toys has  founded a community learning center and The Children’s Toy Museum.

Soap. We all have it and we all use it. Why do we make the choices we make when it comes to personal products. Is is the scent? The color? The smell? The price? Probably a bit of all of these qualities make up the reasons we buy a particular bar of soap. I was given for reviews two bars of soap from One With Nature; the Orange Blossom Glycerin soap and the Coconut Glycerin soap.

I liked the One with Nature soaps  for a variety of reasons. The first thing I noticed was the size of the bar; it is 70z, that is almost twice the size of a regular bar of glycerin soap. Secondly, I was impressed with the bright colors of the bars and I am happy to report that after multiple uses the color stays. The bar has cracked a bit but has not gone mushy or broken into pieces. The Orange blossom has a very light mild scent, just enough to smell nice without sending my husband into a fit of sneezes like many other scented products do. One With Nature soaps have 16 varieties and all are made with the rich salts and minerals from the Dead Sea, making your bathing experience  rich and  moisturizing. The Dead Sea has been widely considered to have therapeutic properties; it is located at the earths lowest elevation and has a greater solid content than any other body of water on this little planet of ours. According to One With Nature, the Dead Sea properties of the minerals  ” stimulates blood circulation and accelerates the natural exfoliation process, restoring the skin to its natural pH balance. ”

In addition, the One With Nature soaps are so great for your skin because all of their soaps are made from 100 % vegetable base, do not contain artificial colors fragrances or animal ingredients of any kind. The bright  colors are a mix of  plant and naturally-occurring mineral pigments and  scents come from pure essential oils or other 100% natural sources. As a consumer this is very important to me as I like to know what is going on my skin, we have been using as many natural products as we can as they are good for us and good for the environment (no harsh chemicals going back into our waterways).

As well as yummy soaps, One With Nature makes several other 100% natural Dead Sea Products;  Hand and Body lotions, washes and a great selection of beautifully packaged collections for gift giving and travel sizes. There is a nice mix of scented (Dead Sea Mud, Lavender, Shea Butter and Coconut Lime) as well as an unscented line of yummy products.

Last but not least, I have to say I am a very price conscious shopper, I love a good quality product as well as a good price. With One With Nature, I don’t have to choose between the two. One With Nature soaps are a great product and a great price; they retail at approximately $4.00 a bar. I am used to paying around $5 a bar for my favorite soaps, so I think $4 is really quite reasonable. At the time of writing, I’ve had the One With Nature Orange Blossom bar of soap in my shower for about two weeks and I’ve barely used about a quarter of it, I expect it will last for quite some time.

One thing that my daughter loves doing is chewing things, next to jumping this is her favourite past time.  It doesn’t matter if it’s meant to be in her mouth or not.  She will chew on anything from rocks to socks and everything in between.  This is why it is important to me to know what is in the items she is putting in her mouth.  Alicia Voorhies, a registered RN and the owner of The Soft Landing is very passionate about making sure the products children use are safe and toxin free.  In fact, she is so passionate about safe and healthy products that her blog has been featured on ABC News and the New York Times.

soft-landingThe Soft Landing offers organic, toxin and chemical free products for babies, children, parents and even pets!  If there is one thing we should all be worried about, it’s toxins.  Lately there has been a lot of news on children’s products that have lead based paints.  You can be guaranteed that all the products have been tested to be safe to chew and do not carry any harmful products.

For review, The Soft Landing sent us Earthen Tree Natural Wood Tommy Turtle Toy.  The turtle is BPA, PVC and Phthalate Free, is handcrafted and colored with natural vegetable dyes from sources such as the Indigo Plant and Turmeric Powder.  So there is no need to worry when this toy makes it into Genevieve’s mouth.

The Earthen Tree Natural Wood Tommy Turtle is a very cute toy as well.  The bright red shell that sits on top of the turtle turns around while it’s pulled across the floor.  It’s so cute to see the little shell rotating around.  The design is very clever.  The shell touches the circle feet which causes it to turn while it is being dragged across the floor.  I think Genevieve is a little too young to get the concept, but all of the adults were very impressed with the turtle.

I did find that the string to pull the turtle was a little short, but it would be very easy to add a little bit of slack when she gets older so she can pull the turtle along while she walks.  Because she is very young at the moment I wouldn’t want the string much longer for safety reasons.

We all enjoy The Earthen Tree Natural Wood Tommy Turtle we received from The Soft Landing, and especially like that the toy is safe to be placed in Genevieve’s mouth, because like I mentioned before – everything goes in her mouth.

If you are looking for an online boutique that has only the best toxin free and safe products for your family, The Soft Landing offers a wide range of products from highchairs, to sippy cups and also carries books to help your family live a greener and safer life.

To have a happy experience when deciding to purchase a house, experts will agree that location is of the greatest importance. When raising a baby, I’ve figured out routine is very important. I have been blessed with a very pleasant child; he sleeps well, eats well and lucky for us, through each stage of his development he has basically put himself on a routine. It’s very easy for us to tell when he is tired or hungry as we can tell by the clock what to expect from him. As much as I would like to take credit for this, our dude loves a pattern and pretty much follows it within a few minutes everyday. One of our favorite parts of the day is bath time; we relax, we sing, we play. We have a wonderful assortment of bath products and toys (thanks to our friends and family who gave us wonderful shower gifts) and we both love the bath time ritual. He has recently figured out that kicking while in the bath soaks mommy and he squeals with delight.

After bath we have a bit of tummy time to air dry, some snuggling and of course a massage. We were given for review the Soothing Mint Lime Calming Body Lotion from Naturally Baby. Naturally Baby is a part of the line of Upper Canada Soaps and I have been a big fan of many of their brands for years so I was especially happy to try to their baby line, Naturally Baby.
nat

Soothing Mint Lime Calming Body Lotion smells exactly like it sounds. It is a crisp mint scent, not too much but just the right amount to smell pleasant but not overpower with senses. The cream is quite rich to the touch and the best thing about Naturally Baby is it is non-greasy. You have to be so careful about the products you use, so many contain lots of unnecessary products, are too heavily perfumed and they may stain clothing because of the added chemicals. As a new mom and a green consumer, the Naturally Baby line has several things I look for in a product; it is made from all natural plant derived ingredients such as Soybean Oil and Aloe, its paraben free, mineral oil free and does not contain synthetic dye. Why do these things matter? In my opinion, less is more. Anything that is put on your skin should have as many natural ingredients as possible and as few ingredients as possible. Why does a baby product need dye? As a green consumer its up to each and every one of us to look at the product ingredients and to decide what is best for you and your baby. Naturally Bab makes a great line of baby products; shampoo, blanke wash, room freshener just to name a few.

all

We look forward to our bath time, its the time of day when the computer is off, the phone is off and we concentrate completely on each other. Our little guy loves his tub time, his massage with the Naturally Baby Calming Body Lotion and his snuggles with his mommy. To include Naturally Baby in your daily routine you can:

We all know how important it is to “Go Green”.  It used to be difficult to find stores that had green products, but now there are full retail stores and online boutiques that have only “Green” products.  Go Green Baby, an eco-friendly online (and brick and morter) store based out of Kingston, Ontario has organic and all natural baby products.

Natalie and her husband Jamin started Go Green Baby after they had their first child.  Cloth diapers are an easy way to make a large positive impact on our environment, but it can be difficult to spend money on cloth diapers as they are more expensive than disposables (up front) and there is not always the opportunity to touch, feel and test out the diapers before hand to see if they will be a good fit for your family.

Go Green Baby offers a selection of cloth diapers, prefolds, all in ones, by companies like  Happy Heinys, Bum Genuis, and Bamboozle just to name a few.  They also offer a whole information section on cloth diapering (because at first it can be overwhelming and confusing).  The best part about Go Green Baby is they also have a loaner program.  The program is set up to test out cloth diapering before making the plunge in purchasing cloth diapers.  This is a wonderful idea because cloth diapering isn’t for everyone and the loaner program offers a wide variety of different types of cloth diapers – very smart.  The small fee for the loaner program then goes towards the cost of purchasing diapers if this is the avenue you choose.

Go Green Baby also has many styles of baby carriers.  They have wraps, slings, rings and backpack styles such as Hotlings and Ergo’s.  There is also a loaner program for carriers as well.  With all the different choices in carriers, it is hard to know what will be best for you and your baby.  With the loaner program at Go Green Baby, you can test out any baby wearing product for a week for a small fee.  The fee will then be applied to the cost of purchasing a carrier if it is over $75.

Go Green Baby also carries organic clothing, all natural and wooden toys, and natural creams.  They carry products for moms and pregnant women including belly oils, nursing bras, and nipple butter.  There is also a section for all natural cleaning products and laundry detergent, which is very important, especially if you choose to cloth diaper.

Go Green Baby frequently has products for sale, so make sure to check back often and also has a gift registry which makes shopping a breeze for everyone else!  By registering with Go Green Baby you are sure to get the products YOU want, not what everyone else thinks you want.

The two set out to develop a product that would not only lengthen the hair, but also aid in the thickness department. Well, it does just that and more.  Bio-Niu, according to happy clients, shows results within weeks.

bio-nuiBio-Niu has helped women and men with a variety of hair loss problems from alopecia to post pregnancy hair loss. Bug & Pickle – What an interesting name for a company that makes creams and other essential body products for moms and babies.  It turns out that Bug & Pickle are two sisters from Vancouver, BC, who’s nicknames were (and still are) Bug and Pickle.  The two sisters have come together to share some great practical products with real natural ingredients.

bugpickle2Bug & Pickle sent me a bottle of baby lotion for review.  The lotion makes my hands and Genevieve’s body so nice and soft after use.  Whether after a tub bath, or just during the day when it seems that Genevieve’s getting a little dry, this cream really moisturizes her body very well.  The Bug & Pickle cream is made with oils from lavender, chamomile, and orange.  I find of the three oils, the lotion smells most like lavender.  This makes the cream perfect for after the tub because the soothing smell of lavender is suppose help with sleep time.  The smell is not over powering, it is just a very light smell.  I frequently find sense too over powering, but this is so soft it does not bother me at all.  The cream is not too oily, and it keeps my skin moisturized and soft (yes I know it is suppose to be a baby lotion, but it has easily become my favourite cream).  Bug & Pickle has the perfect combination of scents and moisturizer.  The Bug & Pickle baby lotion contains aloe vera, shea butter and vitamin E, it is made with  96% all natural products, is not tested on animals.

bugpickleBug & Pickle also sent me some baby butter to review.  The baby butter is great got extra sensitive or extra dry skin.  Thankfully, Genevieve’s skin is no longer extra dry, when she was first born her skin was like scales.  However, my legs are like an alligator (my husband and I have joked about my alligator skin legs for over 10 years).  The Bug & Pickle baby butter is so nice and oily that it really makes a big difference in my legs.  It keeps them moisturized nearly all day – which is surprising.  I have tried many different creams and butters (however never anything from a specialty store, always something from a big box store), and I can see how much better the quality of this body butter is compared to all the others I have tried.  I also used this body butter on my lips and it makes them very soft kissable. The body butter is also made with lavender, chamomile and orange.  I find that the body butter smells more like chamomile than the other ingredients.    I would suggest this for people with very dry skin as it is quite oily.  The Bug & Pickle body butter is made  with 100% all natural ingredients including beeswax, and vegetable oil and is not tested on animals.

bugpickle4Bug & Pickle also carries all natural products for tummy troubles, teething pains, patchy scalps, and soap for babies and nipple and belly creams for mommies. The products are made from natural items like avocado, apricot, beeswax, grape-seed oil, orange extract, aloe vera and lavender, which are items that people know about and can be easily found.  Many times, companies claim to use all natural products, but the names of the products which are used are so uncommon that no one knows what they really are, this is not the case with Bug & Pickle products.

breath-natural

My Mother in Law has been making her own soap for almost as long as I have known her (almost 12 years now).  I have helped her make her soaps and have enjoyed working with her.  There is something really special about handmade soap, it is so pure and natural, and not nearly as harsh on skin.  My Mother in Law did have her own little business selling her soap, however with a few moves, she decided to stop making and selling her soap.  I held on to each piece of soap that she made because I knew it was pure and natural and I wanted each piece to last as long as it could.  Thankfully there are other companies that also make all pure and natural soaps.  One of those companies is Breathe Natural.

breath-natural1Breathe Natural makes soaps, eye treatments, hand wash and even mama stick!  All fragrances used in Breathe Natural products are from essential oils, and the products are chemical and pesticide free, there are also no harsh preservatives or additives.  You can be rest assured that the items by Breathe Natural are safe for everyone to use.

I was sent a Lime body wash from Breathe Natural.  The body wash smells so spectacular.  The scent isn’t very strong at all, it is a very light smell, but it smells so good.  I actually found that it smelled like Lemon merengue pie, and a few days after using the body wash, I had to go out and buy some pie.  (That is how good this stuff smells – it’s good enough to eat).  The body wash is very gentle and smooth.  It does get a decent later as well (something that you can not always get with all natural products).  It did not dry out my skin, and my skin is rather sensitive.  I use this everyday, and just a dab on a loufa is all it takes to get me clean.

breath-natural3Jill Breugem , the owner of  Breathe Natural, also has a new online website  called Market Moms Online.   Market Moms Online is a place for companies to advertise and sell their products.  It is an online boutique geared to moms, but great for everyone.  At Market Moms Online you can find unique items from different companies, all in one convenient location!
