Finding Nemo on DVD & Blu-Ray

Earlier this year, I had the amazing experience to take part in the Finding Nemo 3D release in Hollywood, California.   As always, Disney delivered and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to visit Disney Toon Studios for a private screening of Nemo in 3D.   The movie was on the big screen in 3D on September 14th and now is available on DVD and Blu-Ray  just in time for the holidays.

I love this movie and all the life lessons – lessons for parents, lessons for kids, the power behind a father’s love, friendship, accepting help, building trust….  There is a lot for both adults and kids can learn from this film.  It’s also a very funny movie, with Ellen Degeneres playing Dory the forgetful fish you can count on many laughs.

As much as I love the movie, I’m not so sure about showing it for younger kids.  Princess I HAVE to Watch Nemo, was really hooked on seeing the film, so after fast forwarding the beginning (when Nemo’s Mom dies) and then watching for a bit, she eventually abandoned the movie.  I asked later if she wanted to try to watch again and she said “No, it’s too scary”.  Now, I’ll be honest, I don’t know if she thinks it’s scary because she heard me say I think it’s scary or because she truly thinks it’s scary.  At only 4, it’s hard to get a straight answer from her (on any subject).   I do think kids would find the death of Nemo’s Mom “scary” although you don’t see anything, it’s implied and the feeling of losing a mother would make children fearful of losing their own mother.  There are also sharks with extremely large teeth which young kids would find scary, the movie gets fairly dark during these scenes which enhances the “scariness”

While most of the movie is very funny and touching, I think the scary parts are a little too much for the younger kids.  I love it as an adult, but can’t recommend the movie start to finish for any sensitive child no matter what age they are – unless you want to stick close to the film and fast forward through a couple scenes.   Save this one for the older kids.

  1. I love scary movies but not the gory type horror movies. Psychological thrillers are more to my liking! They scare me at the time but once the movie is over I’m not scared anymore (because they’re just movies) 🙂

  2. I don’t particularly like scary movies, but I can “overlook” a scene or two in a mystery type movie if the movie over all is great.

My kids found Finding Nemo scary so I’d skip the beginning and skip the shark scene for them. Now that they’re older they’re okay with all the scenes.

  3. Am I ever! I can’t watch anything remotely creepy and certainly nothing gory. I always say life is scary enough without watching scary movies!

  4. I’m a little bit sensitive to scary movies. More so now that I am older. When I was a teenager I couldn’t get enough of them.

  5. i wouldn’t say that I am sensitive to scary movies. I like some of them, some of them not so much, it just depends on what type of movie it is and the plot. Some scary movies or thrillers if done right are actually quite enjoyable for me to watch.
