Halloween Treat Buy Back

by Mommy on October 11, 2012

We all know kids get more than enough candy for Halloween! Sure a few chocolate bars and some gum is a nice treat, but when kids start counting into the hundreds of suckers they could be eating their treats for the next 6 months.  What to do with all that candy? Well, in Halifax, there’s a Halloween Treat Buy Back program!

On November 1st, if you bring in your candy to your dentist office, you kid will get $1 per pound of candy they hand in (up to $5).  If your kids are saving for some something special, this is a great way to save their teeth (and their “hyperness”) while getting some cash into their pockets.

Check out your local dentist office to see if they are taking part of the program.

Oh, and I’m sure you’re wondering where the candy goes?  It will be sent over to military over seas, and if your kids want to, they can also make a little card to send to the troops as well.

What a great idea. I have never heard about it, but think this is something we might have to adopt in our household when our daughter is old enough to trick or treat.

This was a program in Nova Scotia.. might want to check your area too (just in case you aren’t from NS)

I love this idea. It’s the kids way of giving back.

That certainly is a great idea. Don’t think the kids would like it too much. Sharing certainly is caring.

That is such an awesome idea. I’d definitely include a sweet letter.

Ha! The first thing that came to mind when I started reading this WAS – where does the candy GO? While I am very much in agreeance with limiting sugary junk – I am quite against waste.. so I was quite pleasantly surprised to learn the candy will go to the troops :-)

What a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
