Heart Smart Families #TimeToStart

by Mommy on August 28, 2012

My family is a very busy family of three, soon to be four.  Nearly every day after work and then after supper Princess Active is outside on her bike, at the park, riding her scooter or just running around having fun being a young girl.  This also means Mom and Dad are out and about chasing after a busy 4 year old.  While it may be absolutely exhausting, we should be extremely thankful we have a reason to get outside and be active.

My husband and I are also fairly active on our own, before I got pregnant I had signed up for a 1/2 marathon and was running 5 kms – I never thought running would be part of my routine, but I loved the feeling (once I was done).  My husband is also a runner… I don’t even want to talk about how fast and far he can go, if anything, I’m pretty proud of him, but perhaps a bit jealous as to how “easy” it is for him.   We’re a busy young family on the go, that’s about to get even more busy with the addition of a new baby!

We also try to eat pretty healthy.  We always have lots of fruit in the house for snacking on or to put in lunches, actually right now we have:

  • apples
  • oranges
  • grapes
  • kiwi
  • pineapple
  • cantaloupe
  • blueberries
  • raspberries
No joke, all these things are on the fridge or on the counter ready to be eaten, and by the end of the week, they will be gone, but… we could learn to be a little more regimented with our eating habits, we also have a tendency to snack on unhealthy things too (chocolate, but it’s dark chocolate I promise) and also pick up quick lunches which can mean lots of calories.  Yikes! I’m sure many of you can relate.
A new program with the Heart and Stroke Foundation called Heart Smart Families is specifically designed for families like mine and yours.  We’re busy with young kids, on the go, and don’t really have a lot of time to think when it comes to meals and family activities – sometimes it’s just easier if someone else gives us ideas and we can “run” with it.
There will be a monthly Heart Smart Families newsletter that will include ideas for you and your family to help you maintain, modify or create healthy lifestyles.  It’s a simple and easy way to make positive changes in your lives.  I’m sure we can all find at least small ways that will enhance our lives.

My grandmother passed away before I even had a chance to meet her.  She was 56.  I don’t want to follow in her footsteps, I want to be healthy and be able to meet all my grandkids and hopefully my great grandkids, I hope you want the same for yourself and your family! The time to start is now.
