Going on a Cruise, Preggo?

by Mommy on August 26, 2012

Imagine this, you’re a blogger (like me), and you’re pregnant (like me), and you get an email asking you and your family to go on an all paid week long cruise – (like me, yup ’cause this happened).

You start to jump up and down – just a little, ’cause your pregnant and jumping isn’t exactly encouraged, and then you get a bit of heartburn cause your really excited and you’ve just been jumping (well not really jumping, I promise Doc).  Then you tell your family and everyone is pumped to be cruising along the Caribbean.   Ahh… the Caribbean, how awesome is that.  I can already feel the sand in my toes, the sunburn on my back, and visualize the sunset at night…

(Pretty good visual eh?)

Are you smiling about your amazing magical trip coming up?  Yes, I am too… incredible isn’t it?

ah… bliss… life is good… I love my hobby…. these were all the things going through my head.

Then I take a peek at the cruiselines website to see where exactly I’ll be going, and then start wondering about pregnancy and cruises.  Slowly my huge grin turns into a mega sad face.  In case you haven’t figured it out, this is where my super happy and exiting story starts to head “south”, but not the kind of south I was hoping for.

Guess what…. if you have entered into your 24th week of pregnancy, you’re not getting on any ship.  Not by getting a doctors note, not by batting your preggo eyelashes, not even by paying! 24 weeks +, you’ll be enjoying the view of your living room.  I’ll be around my 28th week during the cruise I was invited on…. so I hope there’s something good on TV that week.

So, for all of you who are pregnant and were hoping to go on a cruise after 24 weeks of pregnancy, sorry sister, you won’t be able to get on that boat.

I’m a little sad, but at the same time, I completely understand.  At 24 weeks a baby can be born and survive, the ships do not have the equipment on board to help that sweet little early bird take its first breaths… so I’m ok with it.  I’d rather protect the life growing in me then something tragic happening.

Better safe then sorry right?

Am I the only one who didn’t know this?

Awwww, that’s too bad. It is better to be safe than sorry though.

I’m free and not pregnant, hahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ;)

Absolutely! I pray not to give birth at 24 weeks, but you never know! ;)

Sorry you don’t get to go. My husband bought tickets for us to go on a cruise with a group of his friends the next winter a few years ago…then I got pregnant and would you know it, baby’s due date landed so I couldn’t go on the cruise! It was a disappointment. I feel for you.

Oh no,,, i’m so sorry to hear this happened to you too… It’s only when your pregnant that you hear about these rules, not before! I’m hoping to bring awareness :)

I had no idea there was a restriction at that early but it makes total sense, that life is precious inside of you, best take it easy and not take the risk for sure.

You could always watch old episodes of “Love Boat”

most don’t know about any restriction until it happens to them. I could also watch Suite life on deck…

I feel your pain! This June was our 5th anniversary and we had planned since we first got married to go on a cruise for our 5th. It was working out great…our youngest was weaned, so we were going to be able to leave both kids with grandparents and enjoy an awesome getaway before baby came!
I was literally about to pay for the whole trip when the travel agent remembered to check about pregnancy restrictions and I was going to be just a few weeks over, like you. I was, of course, crushed. :-( I had no idea the cut-off would be so early in pregnancy. I figured the restrictions would be easier than air travel…but not so!
We managed to have a good time just going to the beach instead, but I was so bummed…who knows now when it’ll work out again for us to go on a cruise (without kids, anyway) around nursing and the sailing seasons.

oh no… it does seem early.. and it is upsetting, but I’m glad you got to a beach anyway, and I’m sure you managed to enjoy yourself! Hope you get on a ship sometime soon!
