I had my baby nearly 4 years ago. In 2008 the social media world was just crawling, in fact it’s the same year I started blogging. I remember surfing the web for baby related information as my little Petunia grew in my tummy. There were one or two baby related online communities, but none that I really felt like I was a part of.
While I love the real life social interaction with my mom friends, play dates and get togethers are great to talk to real moms about all the craziness that comes with being a new parent; I often found myself awake in the middle of the night with questions about my new baby, or my own situation and surfing the net with little or no direction and no real advice. Often those late night surfing sessions left me with more questions than answers and more panic than relief.
Here I am, once again pregnant (I can hardly believe it), and times have changed tremendously. Social media has opened up a whole new world for Moms like me. A lot has changed in those 4 years. With lots of new online communities and companies using Facebook (a place we already visit daily, hourly, by the minute) to connect moms with moms, it’s way easier to find meaningful and helpful information right at our fingertips. With a nearly 4 year old at home, I still find myself using online resources for everything from sleep help to concussions.
The newest Mom resource to hit Facebook is the Gerber Canada community. 24/7 Mom’s and Dad’s can connect in real time with other parents. No matter what time it is (those 3:30 am feedings), others will more than likely be online surfing Facebook as well, and have the same questions you have about your new bundle of joy. I’m always open to learning as much as I can and using all the resources I can when it comes to the most important people in my life.
