Classic Christmas Carols & a Fun Twist

We all know the classic Christmas Songs…

  • Bing Crosby – I’m Dreaming of a While Christmas
  • Elvis – Blue Christmas
  • Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song
  • Bing Crosby & David Bowie – Little Drummer Boy / Peace on Earth
  • John Lennon – Happy Christmas / War is Over

I recently came across a unique twist on the Twelve Days of Christmas.   Although it is from 1998 – this is the first year I have ever heard it.  It’s worth watching right ’till the end.

If you like unique twists on old Classics then you also have to see this video of the Little Drummer Boy by a student in Winnipeg.

Do you have any favourite Christmas Songs?

Best Christmas Lights in town

Each year, my family and I drive around the city looking for the best Christmas lights in town.  With “Jingle Bells” and other Carols playing in the car, we enjoy each others company as we admire the time people have put into decorating their house for the big event.

Years past, we have driven around aimlessly, going from street to street crossing our fingers to find the best lights in town.  Some years were hits, while others were misses.  Years ago, Gordie Snow’s house in Fall River was sure to be a hit, bus tours from miles around visited his house to see the spectacle he put on each holiday season.   But with his passing, it has left us all scrambling to find a house to match his nostalgia.

Although I highly doubt there will ever be another Gordie Snow, there is a really neat Google Map that pin points all the nicest decorated houses in Halifax and Nova Scotia.

Check out this Interactive Map, get your winter gear on, pack up the kids, grab a hot chocolate and check out the best lit houses.  You can add houses you find on your trips around the city as well.

What a great way to see all the best lights!

Make your own Ornaments

Earlier this week, I made a Gingerbread House from Scratch.  When I was done, not only did I have a sore back from all the rolling, I was also left with a bunch of dough.  Rather than throw it away – which is what I wanted to do (throw it right through the window actually), I wrapped it up and a few days later, took it out again and started rolling.  It was only at this point I realized why my back was in stitches for the past 2 days.  I hadn’t done anything strenuous over the weekend, but once I started rolling out that dough again, it all came back to me… I just spent an entire Sunday making a Ginger bread house… and my shoulder blades were aching because of it.

Despite all this, I was determined to do something with the left over dough.  So, once again, Baby G and I gathered at the kitchen island.  Using cookie cutters we made Gingerbread men, Christmas Trees, stars, bells and angels.  We baked them for 10 minutes and then started decorating.

I made one for our tree, while Baby G Made her’s for her Friends.

Here’s the recipe for the Gingerbread – it’s not for eating.

  • 2 cups light corn syrup (or dark corn syrup for a darker house)
  • 1 1/2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar (or dark brown sugar for a darker house)
  • 1 1/4 cups margarine
  • 9 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Enjoy,

Hershey’s Chocolate & Cookie Exchange

Christmas Gift Idea for the Neighbours

Although I may not be the best at baking cookies (or baking anything for that matter), I sure am good at eating them – especially if they are chocolate!  I recently had the opportunity to ask a few questions to some baking experts (I could have asked them for more than just a few tips) about baking cookies and then having the opportunity to share them with friends.  Here’s what Linda Stahl from Hershey’s Kitchens and Kristen Olson from Betty Crocker made especially to moi:

Fun eh?  I’d love to host a cookie exchange with my friends. I of course would be making the ones that look most impressive, but are also the easiest (not cause I’m lazy, but you’d probably not want to eat anything else I’ve made)!  Today, I have been chowing down on Hershey’s chocolate and I just can’t get enough.  Hershey’s has added to their traditional kisses, they have some christmas varities – like candy cane kisses.  Not only do these look like candy canes, they also have the peperminty flavour, and there are also large Chocolate Santa hats – drooling.

This is just the beginning of the chocolate yet to come during the Christmas season … (should I say hello to a few extra pounds now? you only live once right? I think there is a reason New Years resolutions start on January 1st.  Whoever created the calendar is a genius – you guys are all so agreeable, that’s why I love you.)

Looking for some Christmas cookie recipes?  Check out Hershey’s Kitchen’s

And if you have an easy recipe for a desperate baker such as myself! Please let me know about it. My chocolate addiction would be ever grateful.

Giveaway:
