Christmas Gift idea for the kids
“You sunk my Battleship”, there are words I repeated often while playing the ever popular game Battleship. Placing my ships in hidden areas while getting hit with missiles by my opponent and trying to track down where they have hidden their ships was endless hours of fun. This game of chance and luck has been a hit with kids (and adults I’m sure) for many years and has been unwrapped on Christmas Day for just as long.
This year, Battleship has been taken to a whole new level – Battleship Live – complete with a sensors and a talking tower. I had the opportunity to play this with my cousin on a Friday night. Set up was quick (needed to add my own double A batteries) and then we were ready to start dropping bombs on each other. If you are looking for traditional instructions, where the most vocal person (usually me) takes them and reads the rules, I’ll warn you – there are none. To know how this game works, you have to listen to the tower and he will explain from start to finish. He will even guide you through placing your pieces on the game board.
Unlike the traditional game, you can move your ships along the board game during your turn. However, like the traditional game, you have to try to find enemy ships and sink them. There are some fun ways to get a sneak peek as to where your enemy has their ships placed – sending a spy plane to the other side of the board or dip below with your submarine. It’s quite a bit more intense then the classic game. Along the way there are some minor disturbances the tower announces which can quickly change the direction the game was once headed.
Rather than playing the game with your “friend” it feels like you are playing the game with the center tower as all your interaction is between you and the tower. You have to pay close attention because you can easily go into lala land while your opponent takes their turn to play, because they too are playing with the tower. You might miss out on important tips while they take their turn. It took us about an hour to complete the entire game – start to finish, with the classic game you could have played at least 6 times. It goes without saying, this version is more intense more competitive and way more challenging.
Overall, the game is a lot of fun. I can see both young and old, girls and boys enjoying this game. The terms used in the game are Navy like (so if you have any members in the Navy – they will love this). You will be saying more than just “You sunk my Battleship” during this game!
