Lite-Brite has been around since before I was a child. Who knew a few pegs that light up and create a picture could be such an entertaining toy. As an adult, I have a whole new appreciation for the Lite-Brite, it creates a moment or two of silence while my focused three year old sticks each and every peg though a black piece of paper to create a masterpiece.
It’s been over 20 years since I have used a Lite-Brite and although the toy is very similar to the old classic I once enjoyed, there are a few new features that enhances the creative experience. The Lite-Brite we received is smaller than the one I used years ago, making it easy to carry around from room to room and there is also a battery so no need to
trip over plug and un plug a long cord. The light in the Light Bright has also changed, it’s simple to turn on (my 3 year old can do it on her own), just press a big button in the front and the light turns on and will also flash on and off (for a bit of extra excitement).
If there is one thing I am sure drove my mother completely wild were the Lite-Brite pegs left around the house after I was done making my creations. The new Lite-Brite DD reviewed has taken care of this, all the pegs are stored in the bottom stand – Genius! So, although there were still 1 or 2 pegs left on the ground after we’re done, they were easily put away and ready for the next time.
This Lite-Brite is also a bit smaller than the orignal, making is great for travel (oh, the storage for the pegs make it good for travel too). If there is one area the Lite-Brite can improve, perhaps they could also make a storage slot for the pages, for now we have to keep them separate.
DD can do most of her Lite-Brite on her own (she’s only 3), she might not get all the colours right, I show her what a “y” looks like, and then she can put all the yellow pegs into the “y’s”. So, not only is this increasing her fine motor skills, it is also putting her brain to the test.
This is the same old great Lite-Brite you and I once used, but like most things just has a few new added features making it just that much better. I’m so pleased to see this classic toy make it’s way into my home and now enjoyed by my daughter (and myself once again).
