I was so excited to watch this movie with DD. “Baby Mine” (the emotional lullaby played after Dumbo’s mother is incarcerated) is one of the key songs in this movie. I wanted to see how my baby would react when this song came on – something I have been singing to her since she was the size of a rice grain (5 weeks pregnant).
The movie began and I held onto my breath with my heart beating for this emotional moment that DD and I were about to share. And so we watched, and quite quickly, whether through spite for pushing the movie or simply because she was not interested, DD asked me to turn it off. I was heart broken. But I did not let the demanding demeanor of a 3 year old get to me. We were going to have the “Baby Mine” moment, and so I fast forwarded it to the loving song which shows touching moments between mothers and their babies.
I watched her beaming from ear to ear probably with a small tear in my eye. Her face was unemotional as if it was the first time she had heard the song. Needless to say, once again my build up for a special moment was lost and the movie was turned off. She was obviously not feeling what I was feeling… Just another friendly Motherly reminder not to set your exceptions too high.
It goes without saying that I enjoy the movie Dumbo. Being a mother, I felt a strong connection to Jumbo when she protects her precious baby from the cruel world. What Mother wouldn’t go so far? However, my 3 year old did not have that same strong connection, despite being subject to parts of the movie before she even took her first breath. I’ll continue to sing and hope that one day, she will make the connection between this song and the movie and what it means between a Mother and her child.
Dumbo flies into shelves on September 20th.
