While on vacation, it’s imperative to capture those great family moments on video – just in case you want to win big money on America’s Funniest Home Videos. I have had a few different types of video cameras over the years and none have been as simple and straight forward as my Flip Video Camera.
The Flip is small enough to easily fit in a purse or pocket making it optimal while travelling (I wonder what it was like to travel back in the 80’s when video cameras were the size of microwaves?) It is also very light making it easy to hold up your arm for a long period of time while filming. Have you every tried filming with a large camera and your arm starts to hurt after 20 seconds? The Flip is nothing like that. As long as you can keep your arm upright with nothing in it for any period of time you will be able to do the same with the Flip in your hands as well (it’s that light). If your arm does begin to hurt, it’s easy to still capture the moment while resting your hand and arm. The screen is big enough that you can easily see what’s being recorded.
I am surprised with the good quality video this little camera takes (although I’m not sure why I’m surprised, it is HD). Despite it’s tiny size, it’s not lacking in the quality department – which is a bonus. It works best during the day, as you can see above, here is DD playing in the pool while on vacation. The camera doesn’t have a light so, I wouldn’t recommend it in the dark, but during the day with sunlight, it’s pretty impressive.
I was able to capture some great family vacation moments on the Flip. There was one mini draw back that I forgot to take into consideration while travelling south – I didn’t bring my laptop. If you don’t have a Flip, you’re probably wondering why that matters – well, the Flip is recharged by USB which usually means having it hooked up to your laptop. So, after just a few days of using the Flip for our family memories it died. This is totally my fault and I take full responsibility, because there are also portable USB chargers (that my husband just happens to have, but left at home). So please, learn from my mistakes and bring a charger with you on vacation. I suppose I could have also asked the front desk to charge it for me at their computer, but I didn’t think of that until after vacation.
Overall, I am pleased with the Flip, it’s small, compact, simple and can still zoom in and out like any other camera. For an inexpensive video camera, this is the best value for your money that you will find, just make sure to travel with a charger (or a computer) or get the Ultra – it takes batteries.
