Old Navy – $250 Gift Card Giveaway – CLOSED

I’m sure Old Navy has been responsible for plenty of makeovers since they were established in 1994, but this time Old Navy is getting a makeover!

My local Old Navy in Dartmouth, NS recently went through the redesign and I had the opportunity to check it out. Although it still has that classic Old Navy look, there were a few things that makes the shopping experience at the new stores even better.

What I like about the new Old Navy store is the layout.  Everything is quick and easy to find and although everything is still in it’s own section, there are no longer huge walls that block each section off making it smooth sailing from one area to the next.  The new store is more open concept making the store feel much larger, brighter and airy.  I also really like that the changing rooms are in the centre of the store, they are more spacious, and both the men and women can use the rooms (this is so nice when shopping with a family).  I remember the days when my husband and I would roam around the store aimlessly trying to find each other, now we just meet at the change rooms.

So far, 260 Old Navy stores have been redesigned.  The changes have been made with Moms and kids in mind (because lets be honest here, it’s usually Moms that are doing all the shopping for clothing).  The changes include wider checkouts and change rooms for strollers, larger signs and fast lane check outs.  By the end of 2011, more than 360 of The New Old Navy stores across North America will be redesigned.

The new Spring line has arrived at Old Navy and it includes a large selection of sandals, bathing suits, capris and tees.  Our whole family had the opportunity to take a peek around the store to pick out some of our favourite products.  We all found some really nice items, I got some capris, tanks, and cardigans, and my husband picked up some button up shirts, but my favourite by far were the adorable spring and summer dresses for DD.

Check out the new stores, and the new Spring line!

American Idol – The Drama

What do you guys think of American Idol this season?!? I must say that the show is now more focused on singing rather than drama between a few of the judges and I actually like it a lot more then any other season. I’m not a big drama fan, but I am a singing fan!  I also find that the judges are a lot more encouraging and positive.  Although they still let the not so good performers know they could have done better, they do protect their feelings and don’t crush their spirit.

I generally just leave the TV on in the background in the evenings, while I work away on my laptop and this season I have caught myself watching it a little bit more!

What do you guys think? Are you liking the new American Idol style? Who’s your fav? I’m loving Scotty.

Stearns – Puddle Jumper (2 winners) – CLOSED

DD and I go to swim class every Sunday night, but she is still far from being able to swim and is not trust worthy around water.  While on vacation, I knew that for her and the rest of us to have a relaxing holiday she needed to feel safe while near the water.

Stears, a division of Coleman and a company dedicated to flotation devices, sent us a few different products for review to help us achieve an incident free holiday.  We received a Dora Life jacket and a Puddle Jumper. We tried both products out and found the Puddle Jumper was a much better fit while on vacation.

The Puddle Jumper is loosely based on the same premise as water wings, but has many added protective and safety features.  For starters, the Puddle Jumper does not require human hair to be blown up, it is made with the same materials as a Personal Flotation Devise but allows for more movement.  The Puddle Jumper is very easy to put on on and simply hooks together in the back with a single clip and can easily be tightened or loosened to fit.

Along with having both arms always above the water, the Puddle Jumper also has a band along the front torso which also keeps this area above the water, but still gives small children enough free range to learn to swim.  Much like a full life jacket allows swimmers to  be emerged into water but still keeps them afloat, the Puddle Jumper allows kids to jump around the water but keeps their arms and body above water making it easy to “swim”.

I am so glad that we brought this on holidays.  There were a few times around the beach when DD was not wearing her Puddle Jumper and went in the water a little too deep. We had to make quick dives to pull her back from under the water, but it was nothing too serious.  This normally happened when sand castles were being built and she would make a quick trip to the ocean to fill up her bucket with water.  But in general she had the Puddle Jumper on nearly the whole vacation and was safe and sound in the ocean and in the pool.

Overall, we really liked the Puddle Jumper.  Although we always stayed close and kept our eyes on her while swimming it did give us all piece of mind that she was wearing an approved swim aid while in and around the water.

Properly fitting a PFD

I’m sure we all know about the importance of Personal Flotation Devices (PFD)!  However, it’s equally as important to ensure that your PFD fits properly.

Here is a release from Stearns:

Children’s PFDs are fit according to the child’s weight, so find the appropriate size and have your child try it on. Do not buy a PFD that is too large in the hope that he or she will grow into it.

PFDs should fit snugly, and not ride up over the child’s chin or ears. If there is more than 7.6 cm between the child’s shoulders and the PFD, it is too big and could do more harm than good.

Safety features should include:

1. A large collar for head support that also has a grab strap on it
2. Waist ties or elastic gathers in the front and back
3. A safety strap that goes between the legs to prevent the device from slipping over the child’s head
4. Sturdy, rust-proof buckles and zipper

“Parents who want their kids to wear a PFD should lead by example and wear one too,” adds Gray. “Adult PFDs are fit according to chest size so they should feel snug, but still allow room to breathe and move freely.”

Proper care of your PFD is just as important as finding one that fits. PFDs are designed to save lives – they should never be used as a seat cushion or fender for the boat. Using it in this manner will comprise its effectiveness.
