One of my very favourite books is called “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch. If you haven’t read this book before, I highly suggest it – however if you are hormonal or cry at commercials, I would suggest reading it alone at least 50 times before you try reading it to your kids. Even then you are sure to succumb to the emotion of this emotional book. “Love You Forever” is the first book that I could correlate to Robert Munsch, but it turns out I had been reading his stories since I was a girl. One such book is called The Paper Bag Princess.
The latest collection of Robert Munsch stories is called Mad About Munsch! The book includes 6 typical Robert Stories, full of emotion, silly characters and great illustrations.
Although his writing style is fun and exaggerated, Robert’s stories frequently have a deeper meaning and touches on some difficult parts of life. For example, one of the stories in his new collection is about a young girl in a wheelchair, it’s called Zoom!. Robert makes the wheelchair a really fun thing and I’m sure after kids read this short story, they will want a wheelchair too. But the part that is sure to tug at your heat strings is the mini explanation on how Robert came up with each of the stories. After reading this mini blurb, I had tears streaming down my face! You see, Robert’s stories are a combination of stories made up in his head and children he has met over the years.
Robert is a story teller, and before his stories makes it into a book, he will tell the story over and over again to get it just perfect and then publishes it! If you ever have a few minutes, you have to watch Robert on You Tube (if you are not fortunate enough to get to see him in real life). He is so animated, creative and completely enthralled when telling his stories.
I think I love Robert Munsch more now as an adult than I did as a child. He was just getting started with the classic Paper Bag Princess when I was born, but he has been story telling and writing for many years. I do have to admit the story Love You Forever, is my favourite, favourite, favourite book! It’s only a short story, but it truly is an amazing one.
