A+D – 3 creams & 3 ointments – CLOSED

by Mommy on August 18, 2010

Diaper Rash is an inevitable part of being a baby.  As a child, my Mother tells me, I had severe diaper rash and that I was a very cranky baby because of it.  It turns out, I was allergic to diapers.  Knowing this info, I tried very hard since the day my daughter was born to protect her little bottom from diaper rash (what parent doesn’t?!?).  On top of using diaper creams with every bum change, I also used cloth diapers.  My daughter, thankfully, hasn’t had the same diaper experience as I had as a child.  It could be for a number of reasons, diapers have changed, and so have the rash creams.

I recently received a diaper rash cream that is now available in Canada for review from A + D.  The cream comes in a tube, much like toothpaste (so please don’t leave it laying on the bathroom counter, unless you want to play a funny trick on your husband). The tube makes it really easy to squirt onto your babies bottom.  I find that it’s not as thick as some of the other zinc based creams that I have used in the past, but it seems to do it’s job.  My daughter did not have any problems despite a number of “code browns” (some of which were from an overdose of blueberries).

I am a huge fan of zinc based creams, and although diaper rash creams is typically used for babies bottoms, I use it for almost everything, cuts, scrapes, rashes, you name it.  Zinc based creams have a huge healing power, and the products from A + D have 10% zinc oxide.  On top of the healing powers of zinc, the cream from A + D also has aloe vera, another all natural product that I am a huge fan of.  Aloe vera is great for soothing and healing burns and rashes.  The cream is not oily and has the slightest hint of baby powder.

Diaper rash is going to happen to babies!  As a parent, you can be prepared and inform yourself on what to do if your baby ends up with a diaper rash.  Just remember that like everything else your baby goes throgh, it’s a phase and eventually it will pass as well.

Along with a good diaper rash cream there are a few other things that are must have when baby arrives:

  • A baby swing – this was my life saver.  This was the only place my baby would sleep – other than in my arms.
  • Pacifiers - another life saver, a typical saying in my house was “sookie saved my life” after some gut wrenching screaming.
  • A good husband/friend/neighbour/mom – you need a reliable person that you can call on so you can get away for myself time (or a nap).
  • A breast pump (if you are nursing).  Sometimes, you just need to get away, so store some milk in the fridge or freezer to get that well deserved break.

A must have item for us was bottles. I nursed both of my kiddo’s until they turned two, but I worked full-time. I pumped until they were a year old.
