Step2 – Naturally Playful Countryside Cottage ($329) – CLOSED

One thing that is absolutely necessary during the summer months is spending time at a cottage.  Unfortunately, my husband and I don’t have a cottage to bring our family to.  However, there is still a way for my daughter to get that cottage feeling with the Naturally Playful Countryside Cottage from Step2 that I received for review.  Step2 has amazing play structures, toys and houses for kids ages 0 – 7!

When the Step2 Cottage arrived in the mail, I had my husband put it together that evening.  My mother-in-law was visiting so the two of them put the whole cottage together in less than 20 minutes.  I will suggest getting an electric drill to put it together or you could be there for days twisting all the screws in.  The cordless drill made the process way easier.

This is one amazing and fun place for the kids to hang out.  My next door neighbour babysits 6 kids nearly everyday (how does she do it?!?).   I am lucky enough to have my Mom take care of DD and she takes her outside to play with the neighbour kids every day that it’s nice.  All the kids amalgamate over at my house and play house in the Step2 Naturally Playful Countryside Cottage.  The kids are ages 1.5 – 4 years, and they all love it.

Inside the cottage there is a fireplace and a bookshelf (not functional), a little sink with a faucet that swivels, a stove with a little clicking knob, a mail slot and a flower pot (which I haven’t put any flowers in, DD and my husband use this as ball target practice ).  The kids favourite accessories of the Naturally Playful Countryside Cottage are the doorbell and the cordless phone.  Both of these accessories have batteries (not included) and make noises just like a real doorbell and phone.  The kids hold the phone on their ear and walk around pressing the buttons and talking just like grownups would on the phone.  They also ring the doorbell at the front door (which is also functional) and open and close the door.  The cottage is also tall enough for all the kids to stand in without having to bend over (it’s 54″ tall).

It’s so nice to see all the kids play make believe and pretend.  It’s obvious that they are having lots of fun, and are learning at the same time (how wonderful).  They don’t all fit inside at once, but they take their turns playing make believe with all the functions that the cottage has to offer.

The Step2 Naturally Playful Countryside Cottage has stood up to 7 kids playing and banging it around as well as the blistering heat and a few torrential down pours.  It is still in excellent condition.   This cottage is a huge hit with all the kids in my neighbourhood.

Backyard Safari Outfitters – Adventure Kit – CLOSED

My daughter may not yet be 2, but she is already obsessed with “b-ugs”.  The Backyard Safari Outfitters products couldn’t have come at a better time for her.  The ants and spiders are in full force and are nearly taking over our sidewalks.  Going on walks with our daughter is pretty much torture because she stops at every single crack to look at all the “ant-s”, down on her tummy with her eyes close and her mouth wide open for the ants to nearly walk right in.  When you are 22 months, bugs are absolutely amazing.

The first day that we received our Backyard Safari Outfitters products, we took it straight outside and started on the hunt for bugs!  It first lead us to our front deck, but I thought it would be more exciting to keep going because searching for bugs is half the fun.  The next door neighbour’s child (who just turned 3), couldn’t help herself when she saw DD and I outside with the bug vacuum – a strange and captivating contraption.  So the three of us were now on the hunt, and just a few minutes later we found a spider to investigate.  Being a big kid myself  (the adult), I thought it would be best if I was the one that pulled the trigger to try to suck in the spider.  The bug vacuum was able to suck in this little guy and went straight into the viewing area that is complete with a magnifying glass so you can get a closeup of the little creature.  Each child spent time ohhing and awwing over their newest outdoor friend.  The magnified glass isn’t that powerful, but it does enhance viewing.   To let the spider go, we simply had to twist the magnifying glass and out he crawled.

We then used the Bug Vacuum on many other critters, including flies and ants, and found that sometimes the bugs were stronger than the suction, so they were able to just crawl around the cone part of the vacuum and didn’t make their way into the viewing area.  The easiest bugs to capture were the ones that were already caught in spiders webs.  Either way, the kids loved just using the Bug Vacuum (once I gave it over), and started to pull the trigger on unsuspecting victims.  If you want to scope out bigger bugs, the vacuum comes with a simple attachment that has a larger nose to let bigger bugs in.

Backyard Safari Outfitters also carries a cargo vest for your little hunter. My daughter is nearly 2, and the vest is for children sizes 5 and up, so it was rather large on her.  The vest has all kinds of little pockets, d rings and looks like something a dad would wear while out on a fishing trip (we all know how much kids want to be like their dad’s).

Overall, the products at Backyard Safari Outfitters are lots of fun for little ones.  Despite my daughter being so young, her and the neighbour had lots of fun scoping out the bugs around our yard.  I didn’t find the suction was enough to get all the bugs, and the magnifying glass was a little weak, but to the kids it was amazing.  (Do you think I should let them know that my husband went out in the evening to spray  all the insects with bug killer?!?.  I would have thought that being chased around by two toddlers would have been enough for them to vacate the premise, but I guess not).

Time Out advice

DD isn’t quite 2 yet, so you can imagine that she is testing her boundaries regularly.  We give her mini time outs when she bites, pinches, throws things,, etc. etc. We put her on the stairs and make her sit there for just over a minute and say “Time out – no pinching”.  She gives us a huge smiles and says “tymut”.  She actually likes being there.

This evening she was jumping on the couch with the cushions off and would stop mid jump to take a “tymut” on the stairs -even when she hasn’t done anything wrong.  She loved sitting on the stairs to take her own time out.

How are we suppose to teach her the difference between right and wrong she loves time out?!?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks,
