Toy Story and Toy Story 2 combo pack on DVD and Blu-Ray

Toy Story and Toy Story 2 combo pack on DVD and Blu-Ray is available in stores March 23rd (the first time these movies are viewable on Blu-Ray).  Toy story was originally released in 1995, and is a classic Disney / Pixar movie that I have watched a number if times despite being a teenager when it was first out.  Toy Story is probably one of the only films that has a sequel that is just as successful as the original (it has won many awards).  The sequel was released in 1999.  I have also watched this movie a few times despite being nearly 20 when it was released – what can I say, I am a Toy Story fan!

Here’s a Synopsis:

Toy Story

Experience a hilarious fantasy about the lives toys lead when they’re left alone.  Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), an old-fashioned cowboy doll, is Andy’s favorite.  But when Andy gets Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) for his Birthday, the flashy new space hero takes Andy’s room by storm!  Their rivalry leaves them lost with a toy’s worst nightmare –Sid, the toy-torturing boy next door.  Woody and Buzz must work together to escape, realizing along the way that they’ve got a friend … in each other!

Toy Story 2

While Andy is away at summer camp, Woody is toynapped by Al McWhiggin, a greedy collector who needs Andy’s favorite toy to complete his “Woody’s Roundup” collection.  Together with Jessie (voices by Joan Cusack), Bullseye, and the Prospector, Woody is on his way to a museum where he’ll spend the rest of his life behind glass. It’s up to Buzz, Mr. Potato Head, Hamm, Rex, and Slinky Dog to rescue their friend and remind him what being a toy is all about.

I really enjoyed sitting down with my family to watch these movies – we had a Toy Story weekend.  It had been years since I have seen them, and it gave me a new appreciation for how great Pixar films are.  Some of my favourite parts of the movies are the old toys including trolls, Mr. Potato head, Barrel of Monkey’s and Etch A Sketch, all things that were around while I was growing up.   I also like the the positive messages about helping one another, looking past differences, and how important it is to stick together.

Both the movies are pretty tame, however there were a few mini scary parts for the really younger kids such as Sid and his toys and a few words such as stupid and Shut Up, but overall, both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are very family friendly movies.

I really like that Toy Story 2 introduces Jessie the cowgirl, although Toy Story does appeal to girls, I think the presence of Jessie makes girls want to watch this movie even more; she’s clever and adorable, and has a great accent.   I also like that Al, the Toy Collector is played by Wayne Knight, who is Newman from Seinfeld.  I am also a Seinfeld fan (like millions of others), so  this character really appealed to me, and probably many other parents.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of Toy Story 3 (it was great to get a sneak peek – there are some funny references to modern times such as Ebay) , which is due out in theaters June 18, 2010.  Andy, is all grown up now, so Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the gang end up in a daycare.  I’m sure the adventure will be just as exciting and funny as the previous ones.

I may be 30, but I still enjoy a good movie – whether or not it’s a cartoon.  Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are movies that every member of the family, young or old will enjoy.  I wish my daughter was old enough to bring to the theater, because Toy Story 3 is one movie that I would really enjoy seeing there.  Until then, we will watch the movies at home on DVD and Blu-ray.
