Christmas Gift Idea for families
I love the holidays for a variety of reasons; the food, the decorations, the chocolate and of course all the family time. Some families are sporty, some are crafty, my family members are all movie buffs. We love getting together for a good family movie we can all watch together, there are 13 grandchildren in my family (23-10 months) and it’s nice when we can all watch a movie that entertains the kids and the adults as well.
We were quite excited to receive for review Night at the Museum-Battle of the Smithsonian, the sequel to the very popular 2006 movie starring Ben Stiller. Battle of the Smithsonian is the exciting tale of Larry Daley, a former night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, where the exhibits come to life after dark because of an ancient Pharaoh’s tablet. The sequel picks up a few years later, Larry’s career as an inventor has taken off and although he does not work at the museum anymore he still stops by and visit his friends, the exhibits. On his latest visit to the museum he finds out many of the exhibits are being shipped out to the Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C and they are going to go without the tablet. This is where the excitement begins, Night at the Museum-Battle of the Smithsonian re-unites Larry with several of his original museum character buddies such as Robin Williams as Theodore Rooselvelt and an all star cast of new characters ready for action.

The new cast features classic historic figures like General Custard and American heroine Amelia Earhart and a few really cute cameo’s from Oscar the Grouch and few other notables. I am not going to spoil it for you but I did laugh out loud during those well placed cameos. I’ve watched both Night at the Museum and the sequel and I was fearing that Battle of the Smithsonian would suffer the same fate as many a sequel has by not being as good as the original. I am pleased to say if you liked the first, you’ll love the second. The storyline flows well, its easy to follow and it’s action packed. The special effects are fantastic, my favorite scene has Larry (Stiller) and Amelia (Adams) jumping in and out of a photograph, you know the photo; the black and white of the soldier kissing the woman as they celebrate the end of the war, its brilliantly re-created and has Larry (Stiller) and Amelia (Adams) jumping out of the photograph . While the action takes place in the lower levels of the Smithsonian, the superb acting of the all star cast as a wide variety of historical characters really bring this movie to life. I have two favorite characters; one of the original cast is the delightfully shaggy haired Owen Wilson as Jedediah, the pocket sized cowboy. I love him, he has great dialogue with Larry (Stiller) and they play off each other really well. My personal favorite from the new cast is Amy Adams as the delightful heroine Amelia Earheart. Adams plays the historical role of the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic with an equal amount of charm as well as determination. She is lighthearted
and fun but plays Earheart with the quick intelligence and passion for adventure Earheart was known for.
With an interesting mix of comedy, romance and adventure,Night at the Museum: Battle of theSmithsonian is an excellent choice for family entertainment. It’s suitable for all ages, and a great way to enjoy some family time.
As an added bonus, Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian comes with a second DVD full of special features which include games playable by DVD player & PC Computer. These special features are a great way for kids to learn a bit of history and have fun while challenging themselves.
