Christmas Gift Idea for Eco-Friendly Families

When I started to hear rumours that plastic wrap and containers carried harmful components, I began to do my own research. At the time, I was struck by the lack of safety in these products, as they often contain such things as dioxon (which is cancerous) and PVC (causes a number of irreversible body changes, especially in young children). I remember one article in particular, whose writer was Jewish; she said that she couldn’t use food plastics because it contained animal by-products that were not kosher. Animal by-products? In my food wrap? Ick! I am no scientist and I am not on a mission to get the world off of plastic, but I do know that plastic wrap and containers are making their way out of my house.

lavsh-and-limeIf you are wondering what to replace your food plastics with, I would suggest the Italian made Eco Food Covers I received for review from Lavish & Lime. Lavish & Lime are a Canadian (Vancouver) based store that specializes in unique eco choices for your home, every member of your family, on the go, body, living and even jewellery. Lavish & Lime has a helpful Christmas suggestion list (covers all price points from stocking stuffers to larger gift items) that includes a felt necklace, passport covers, funky reusable shopping bags, alcohol free natural hand sanitizer and some very, very cool toys. Be sure to check out Lavish & Lime‘s blog; it also offers up great gift tips.

dump-truckThe Eco Food Container Covers I received for review are … beautiful. Beautiful food covers? Yup. They come as a set of three, all in different sizes (11 cm, 16cm and 21 cm diameters), and are made of a 100% food safe non-toxic silicone (read: BPA free). I tried the covers on a glass bowl, a pottery bowl and porcelain (pyrex) container all with the same result. In short: they work and they work well. I tipped one of them over the sink and even though the contents were good and juicy, it did not leak. These UV resistant covers are almost too-good-to-be-true; they are oven, freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe (although hand washing them is best). Environmentally and economically speaking, you can do away with having to replenish your plastic wrap stock by using these reusable eco covers, as they do not deteriorate over time, and do away too with the worry of what is in the wrap. As an added bonus, I no longer have to fight with the unforgiving clinginess of the plastic wrap!
