Christmas Gift Idea for crafty families

I enjoy Christmas crafts just as much as any kid.  I especially love any craft that I can do by myself, and have a professional look by the end of it.  Like I have mentioned before, I am not a crafty person – although I do enjoy trying.  This next company has invented a craft that anyone (I mean absolutely anyone) can do, and in the end, it looks like it was something bought from a store.

246Joobli Studio is a boutique toy development company with a passion for art and design.  They have created an amazing art package of Shrinky Dinks.  Sounds a little weird, I know – but trust me… these things have won awards including Creative Child Magazine, TD Monthly Magazine, and ToyDirectory.com.

So what is Shrinky Dinks? It is craft plastic that can be drawn on, cut up, placed in the oven and then it magically – right before your eyes – shrinks.  The new shrunk plastic is hard, thick and can be used for many different types of crafts, from “stain glass”, or ornaments, to jewelery, the opportunities are endless with Shrinky Dinks.

250For review, Joobli Studio sent me the Christmas Craft package called Christmas Fun Pack.  The Christmas Fun Pack of Shrinky Dinks includes, 6 pieces of the magical shrinking plastic, and a huge array of traceable Christmas themed pictures, from Gingerbread men, to dolls, and nutcrackers. I have had more fun creating name tags and Christmas Tree ornaments with Shrinky Dinks, than any other project I have ever attempted.  The process is so easy and the results are very impressive.

This is literally how easy it is – trace, colour, cut and bake – that’s it.  The exciting part, is the baking.  While in the oven for 1 – 3 at 325 F, the magic happens.  The piece of plastic that used to be a full page gets all twisted, and wavy, it looks like it is completely ruined.  However, just a few short seconds later, it starts to flatten out again.  Once it’s completely flat, it’s ready to come out of the oven, and it’s 9 times thicker, and 1/3 the size it used to be.

254Shrinky Dinks is also fool proof, one time I thought my creation was finished, so I pulled it out of the oven.  However I realized that it wasn’t quite done shrinking, and still has some of the wonky – wavy look to it.  I was going to throw it out, but decided to throw it back into the oven.  A few minutes later, to my surprise, the ornament had completely flattened out.

I suggest getting permanent markers, I find that these work the best.  Another tip for the first time  user is to use the permanent marker on the slick side, I found that the ink ran and is not as sharp when colouring on the rough side.

Shrinky Dinks is probably the best invention for really easy and usable crafts.  I hand made Christmas Gifts this year – things like earrings, and tree ornaments from the Shrinky Dinks, and no one will ever be the wiser that they were created by yours truly.  In all honesty, if I can make these – you can too, and they are also a lot of fun!  The creations are endless, and you will be thinking of so many ways that you can put Shrinky Dinks to the test.
