Christmas Gift Idea for pregnant women / new parents

During the first few months after bringing our daughter home, I was seriously sleep deprived. Our family’s sleeping patterns have improved, but I still suffer from “Mommy Brain”, a condition characterized by a number of embarrassing symptoms, including slow thinking and poor motor control. Some of my most memorable experiences include giving myself a black eye walking into the bathroom door, pumping soft soap on my toothbrush (did this one just last week) and wearing my pants inside out for an entire morning.

I mention my favorite stupid moments because, in hindsight, they are kind of funny. What isn’t so funny is not being able to answer the simple questions that your midwife / public health nurse / physician has for you when you need some parenting advice. How long was your child’s last nap? How many bowel movements a day? Which breast did you last feed on? When you are sleep deprived, these are painful questions to try to find the answers to. When my midwife told me to keep track of how many times I breastfed a day, I am not joking when I say that it took me four days to figure it out. And this is important information, folks.

Thankfully, Toronto mom Lindsay Harris of Glow Baby created a journal to take the pain out of figuring out your baby’s feeding, sleeping and diapering habits. The Baby’s First Journal I received for review is small enough to take in your purse or diaper bag and is ring-bound to lie flat. Each page represents one day and requires just a checkmark in most boxes as you make your way through your day of poops and breast milk. Other columns include how long the feeding took, whether it was breast or formula and sleep times. Two small boxes near the bottom allow you to document whether you have given baby their daily vitamin and bath (trust me when I say there will be days when you will not have this information at the ready) and a section for additional notes.

As a mom who wants to care for her baby the best way she can, I fully recommend this book – not just because it makes sure that your baby’s needs are met, but because we all need to reduce our parenting stress. Why try to remember what you can write down in an easy to read, easy to fill out, organized chart? At the end of the day, when baby is sleeping for the night (ha ha ha ha ha….), you can peruse your journal entries, studying them for important behavioural patterns that may just unlock the mysteries of your baby’s beautiful inner workings.
