ErgoPouch – Organic Quilt (~$85) – CLOSED

by tara on December 30, 2009

As each generation grow older and reproduces the information regarding keeping a baby safe often changes. I find it hysterical when you purchase a DVD player you receive a 40 page instruction book but when you have a baby you stay in the hospital for 48 hours and then you go home with your delicate being and there is no instruction manual. Our parents and friends try to give us the best advice but it really is a learning curve and somethings we often learn the hard way.  On the plus side, I feel we do become better parents because of the system of trial and error. One of the things I have found frustrating is how quickly the norms can change. As children, we of a certain age slept on our bellies in a crib with blankets and bumper pads. 30 odd years later we are told children should sleep on their backs with no pads or blankets in a crib (mine has had two recalls)…what is a parent to do? You want your baby to be safe and warm, but we are not supposed to use blankets. We swaddled our dude until he was 4 months old, some say that’s too long but we were all happy. He slept better and so did we, he was warm and he couldn’t get his feet caught in the crib rails so he didn’t wake up crying. More often than not he sleeps in our bed and we are okay with our choice. He’s happy and so are we. During the day, he still sleeps in his swing and we are trying to make the transition to his playpen. With our naptime challenge comes the same old question, how to keep him warm and safe?

We received for review the ErgoPouch Baby Sleeping Bag; the organic cotton quilt. It is super soft as the outer sheeting  is 300 thread count and the inner lining is pure organic cotton fiber.

The ErgoPouch is essentially designed like a duvet cover to keep the warm air in and be breathable yet its clever design has little stretch inserts on the shoulders and sides which creates a snug fit but leaves enough room to snugly allow your baby to move freely without getting tangled (which causes them to wake up and get and upset). Made without the use of pesticides or chemicals, the ErgoPouch is hypo-allergenic and originates from Australia and is available at many stores worldwide.  There are several key features which I believe led it to being the the 2009 winner of the iParenting Media Award for Outstanding Product. The pouch has a doubled ended zipper, you can unzip from the top near your child’s neck or at the bottom near their feet so you can do a bum change and not wake up the babe! Each of the zippers is covered with a small piece of material with a snap so the babes cannot unzip themselves.  No wonder the ErgoPouch helps babies sleep better. The ErgoPouch is a great idea for everyday use as well as for traveling. We are very excited to use ours for our camping trip in the summer. I only wish we had known of  the ErgoPouch this past summer when we went to visit the in-laws in Newfoundland, it was so cold! Our son can move around in his quite nicely, initially, I was thinking he would get frustrated and not be able to sit up, but he moves around quite fine in his little sleeping bag. He can sit up and he is so content, he just hangs out and snuggles with us. I can’t wait to camp with it!

Depending on the age of your baby, ErgoPouch has a product for you. For newborns, there is a really snuggly swaddler, the Ergo Cocoon. How I wish we had the Cocoon when our little dude was born. I could never really get the hang of swaddling using a blanket so I used to have to wake my husband up in the middle of the night every time our son had to have a bum change. The ErgoPouch sleep sack is great for ages 0-36 months and is available in 4 materials; the Alpaca, the organic cotton quilt, the Bamboo fleece and the Bamboo Sheeting all with different criteria depending on your needs and how warm the room is where the baby sleeps. If you are not sure of what to put on your child for pj’s, ErgoPouch also has a super cute selection of Bamboo 2 piece pajamas which are available in a variety of weights (cool, mild or warm). Not sure the temp of the bedroom and what to wear at each temperature? Our baby sleeping bag came with a small thermometer so we knew the temperature and there is a handy little chart to tell you which pouch to use and which jammies should go under it. We love this.
