November 20th, 2009Getting a Website Started

This weeks question comes from Kathy Hodson, she has just started a site called A Mom’s Impression
How did you get your website set up? I see a lot of different sites use website designers, but as a new site just starting out, I don’t have the cash flow to do that. I can’t seem to find just the right template on Wordpress. What would you recommend?
To be honest, I did not set up my website myself, my husband did it all for me. So, I went to the source (my hubby) and asked for his advise.
This is the answer I received…
Go to the Wordpress.org forum and don’t be afraid to ask a question about customizing a template. You will never find the perfect template for you. Each website is personalized, and you can do this yourself by adding widgets and plugins. If you don’t feel comfortable editing the temple, ask the question on the Wordpress forum, and someone will probably be willing to help you. They may be even willing to give you the code (but no promises).
Another thing you can do, is ask the theme creator for help. My husband needed some help with one of the plugins on my site, so he asked the plugin author directly for help. The plugin creator was more than helpful in working with my husband to get the exact code for what I wanted done.
If all else fails, you can visit a site like Elance . Elance is a website that connects small businesses to do freelance web designers, programmers, and graphic designers together for a very affordable price. You simply have to make a post about what you want done and how much you are willing to pay. Value for dollar, you can get a lot of help.
Do you have any suggestions for Kathy?
