Christmas Gift Idea for a pregnant / nursing Mom

I breastfeed. Not for political reasons. Not to make a stand for women’s rights. Not to show the world that “breast is best”. I breastfeed because my kid gets hungry and I can biologically satisfy those needs; it’s a natural relationship that I can have with her. That, and breastfeeding is waaay easier for me at 3am than bottle prep. While I can appreciate that there are other motivations for breastfeeding (and I admire those that have them), I am not about to put a shout out for breast advocacy, least of all when I am in public feeding my child. And I know that there are people out there who silently thank me for this; they have no interest in seeing my boobs.

hh1medianl1Having said all of that, I do go out and I do feed my daughter when we go. So, what is a mom to do? Well, Bebe au Lait founder (and mom) Claire Ekelund created Hooter Hiders, a modern cover up designed specifically for this reason.

When I received Hooter Hiders for review, I immediately put it to good use. The dual D-rings at the neck make the closure very easy to manage, even if you just have one hand to use (actually, I even adjust it with my teeth if my daughter is extra squirmy). The top of Hooter Hiders has a flexible plastic loop that keeps your neckline open, so that you can keep an eye on your child while they are feeding – my daughter loves this feature, it means that she doesn’t have to keep moving the apron aside to see my face (and exposing me in the process). We use the very handy external pocket for pacifiers, so in case she goes to sleep, it is at the ready (note: not all selections have this feature). Hooters Hiders nursing cover is plenty long enough without being bulky. The whole thing folds neatly and stores in a matching storage bag, which has an external D-ring in case you wish to attach it to your baby gear. Hooter Hiders has allowed us to breastfeed privately while we are in public or provides a sunshade on those rare days when the sun is shining here in Canada.

Hooter Hiders nursing covers are machine washable and available in a beautiful collection of fabrics, including some organic and silk choices (you can even get a matching clutch to store your cover with the silk selections). And it has received some celebrity attention – Hooter Hiders nursing cover is owned by such starlets as Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow and Liv Tyler. Bebe au Lait also offers a line of jewellery, burp cloths, bibs, towels and hooded towels.
