Teach My Baby ($50) – CLOSED

by Mommy on October 8, 2009

teach-my-baby

You may remember a few  months ago, I reviewed an excellent Canadian made product called Teach My Toddler.  Christy is back, and this time she has a brand new product to add to her Teach My line – it’s Teach My Baby.  Teach My Baby is a full kit of age appropriate learning tools to help your youngster learn the basics.  The kit has all the necessary tools in one convenient package and is broken  up into categories which helps the teacher teach as well.

teach-my-baby1Teach My Baby has 4 sections:  First WordsFirst NumbersSelf and Sound & Touch. Each section also has a secondary teaching tool, which includes blocks, puzzles, mirrors and finger puppets.  The sections are creative, innovative and interesting to keep babies excited while they are learning.  I can not get DD to sit down for 2 minutes to read a book.  Her attention span is about 10 seconds – which is really upsetting for me.  I wish I could sit her down in a chair, and rock her for just 5  minutes and read her a nice story.  She is busy, busy, busy.  I was soooooooo surprised when I took out the Teach My Baby kit and she actually sat for 10 – 15 minutes playing with each item.

As the kit suggests, we take out one section per session and teach her just a few things at once.  I have to admit, her favourite is the sound and touch section.  She loves to feel the different textures of the board cards.  There is a fluffy kitty, a smooth pig and a feathery duck.  DD will touch and feel all these animals over and over again.  At the same time, I will say the sound that the animal makes.  Although there is no cow in the Teach My Baby program, she seems to me making a “moo” sound – who knows?!?.  She also like the Self section, which has all different sized blocks with mirrors.  She loves to stack them, throw them around the room and carry them around.  I try to touch her own face and say things like “nose”, “eyes” and “mouth”, and show her in the mirrors.  She likes to look at herself and smile.

teach-my-baby2I am more than happy to be able to sit with her for a few minutes and spend quality time teaching her.  This is the only quite time we get in a day.  It feels the the most successful part of our day as well.  I keep all the sections of the Teach My Baby in the convenient kit and take it out to make teaching time special.  DD knows that these are special toys, and once she starts to venture away, the kit goes away until the next day.  When the next day comes, she is excited to see the kit again.  It’s amazing, but it does work.  Perhaps we should do this with some of her bigger toys.

The Teach My series is an excellent program.  I am very proud that they are Canadian, and have even been featured on Dragon’s Den, which is the original version of Shark Tank.  Although Christy did not get the deal she was looking for, she got a tremendous amount of exposure and it made her an stronger person.  The Teach My Baby is brand new since her appearance on Dragon’s Den, so she obviously didn’t let a few Dragon’s scare her off.

It’s never too early (or late) to start teaching your child, Teach My Baby is appropriate for babies ages 6 – 18 months and Teach My Toddler is for 18months+.  I am just waiting for the Teach My Dog program!

What I learned:

Teach My Toddler was founded in 2007 by mompreneur, Christy Cook. Realising that parents are the most important teachers, Christy scoured educational supply stores to find products to educate her 18-month old son, Finn. Not finding an off the shelf solution, Christy aimed to make it easier and less expensive for parents, so she created Teach My Toddler, the award winning learning kit for toddlers.

Congratulatins to a fine prouduct.
