I sing to my 7 month old like she doesn’t have ears, like she doesn’t have taste. Like she somehow understands that in some other life her mother was a tin eared rock star. I ease (?) her through the day by singing the classic Beatles songs, then move on to the genre of my teenaged years with 80’s hair metal. And then there is the non-stop nursery rhymes – poor child. She frequently knits her eyebrows, trying to figure out how to make me stop. I’m not offended. Unfortunately, it encourages me to try harder, which frustrates her. I am sure if she could coordinate her little hands to clamp over her ears, she would.  Ironically, the worst part about my insistence to make her a music lover is that I sing daily activities into made up songs. You know the kind; I know you have been there. These “songs” are usually the result of being overtired and are more for my own sanity than for my child’s pleasure. It sounds something like “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”, “Yellow Submarine” or “Heart and Soul” but the words have been rewritten, sculpted into the diaper change, the feeding, the nap.

You can imagine my daughter’s utter relief when I received LiviMack’s “Frogs In Your Underpants” for review (it’s a CD). And what a relief it was. The 10 track CD is a breath of fresh air from the usual, bouncy melodies of children’s music. Sure, you will find the classics here, like “Humpty Dumpty”, “Mary Had A Little Lamb”, “Eensey Weensey Spider”, but there is nothing boring or predictable about these original musical arrangements. The traditional nursery rhyme has met its jazz friend in LiviMack’sCD.

LiviMack has been writing songs for a long time. She would make them up while hiking, doing dishes, or if she just felt like writing something on the spot. She says that these songs were sometimes in response to the beauty of nature, but most often they were simply silly songs; songs about little plastic dinosaurs, or squirrel safety tips. The songs were such a hit, she recruited her husband and Frogs In Your Underpants (the CD) was born.  LiviMack says that she appreciates the lighter side of life and feels truest to herself when being silly.

The catchiness of the CD spans the years, as both my daughter and my friend’s son, Thomas, love the music. Thomas bee-bops around while it plays, making him even more irresistible than he already is. Even I have been known to hum a few lines here and there; a respite for all. Our favorite is LiviMack’s title track, Frogs In Your Underpants, an off-the-wall, fun and upbeat song. Here is a snippet of the lyrics:

May the light always find you on a dreary day
When you need to be home may you find your way
May you always have courage and take a chance
And never find frogs in your underpants
