I know it can sometimes (all the time) be difficult to get your organizational manager to do their job, especially when there is so much on the go. And especially when it turns out that the organizational manager is you. So, it is wonderful when a company gives you a helping inspiration to be the Super Parent you really, really want to be.

I love this lunch bag

When I received the Tasty Lunch Tote from Built for review, I thought it looked rather cool. I mean, it is largely purple with a funky dot design, has an oversized zipper that runs the length of the mouth of the bag and is fairly lightweight (not that I have ever had a problem in the past with heavy lunch bags, but the lightness is that noticeable). What I did not know was how cool it actually is, both figuratively and literally.

First off, that lightweight feature I mentioned? Turns out the lunch bag is made mostly of neoprene. Yes, the same material wetsuits are made from. The same material that you can cover your body in to swim in near freezing oceans and the like. And while I am no expert on hot / cold issues, making a lunch bag out of this stuff makes perfect sense to me. After all, it is all about keeping the hot stuff hot and the cool stuff cool, right? Built says that the Tasty Lunch Tote will do this for up to four hours, depending on external temperatures. By the way, this lunch bag has been tested for lead safety and contains no vinyl or PVC. Cool (literally) and cool (figuratively).

Second, that heavy duty zipper is a fabulous feature. I drive a lot, which means that when my organizational manager is really on the ball, I pack a lot of lunches and snacks. Up to this point, I thought perhaps my packing skills needed continuing education; the contents of said lunch / snack would be all over the car by the time I got to my destination (my husband blames my driving, but that is another story). It turns out all I needed was a self-contained unit to keep my mess in check, giving me a lot less to do at the end of my ride (whew!).

The whole lunch bag measures W 30.5cm x H 26.7cm x D 14.6cm and stores flat, which is great for saving on cupboard space. It is stain resistant and machine washable. Machine washable!!! It isn’t too hard to guess that Built has a few parents on their design team.

When I was a kid, it was a big treat to go anywhere to eat. Even though my parents were diligent about making sure I had enough to eat before leaving the house, I would invariably feel very hungry whenever I saw the golden arches looming in the distance. Looking back, I wonder why they had not bothered to pack a lunch or snack bag for me to keep me quiet during what surely must have been a frustrating drive for them. Even if they had, I doubt the bag would have been anywhere near as playful as the Munchler Lunch Bag from Built I received for review. I suspect the Munchler pack might have engaged me enough to forget about french fries and sundaes.benny-lunch-bag1

The “Benny” Munchler Lunch Pack is an insulated soft sided zippered bag that has been specially illustrated by the award winning children’s book author, Stephen Savage (of Polar Bear Night fame, by the way). Benny is a bengal tiger, whose fictional back story is given with the bag. There are four fun characters in all to choose from – all colourful, all amusing and all environmentally aware, saving on disposable bags. The pack itself is perfect for tiny hands and lays flat when fully unzippered so that it can double as a placemat at meal / snack time and take up less room in your cupboard.

By now, you must have an idea how much I like Built’s products. What I didn’t mention before is that Built is one of those companies that you really like buying from – not only for their ingenious designs – but because you can imagine yourself working there and liking it. The company comes with a manifesto (check it out on Built’s website), which includes things like “Not for everybody, but for the every-other-body”, “Prescriptive design shackles the mind” and my personal favorite: “The future lies on the factory floor”.

By the way, when you are browsing Built’s website, be sure to check out the Cushy Tushy Changing Pad and Built’s other very cool kid friendly products.
