RocLok – CLOSED

by Mommy on August 6, 2009

roclok-logo

Have you ever locked yourself out of your house?  I’m not quite sure how it happens, but it has happened to me more times than I like to admit.  If this is something that is happening to you, there is hope:  The RocLok is a cleaver place to store an extra key outside.  No one will even know that the rock is actually a safety box for your key.  Do any of you have an extra key outside?  Let me guess,,, it’s under your front mat, or under a flower pot – I’m right aren’t I?!?  The RocLok looks and feels so much like a real rock, no one will even be the wiser that it is storing a key to your house.

I received a RocLok for review.  Although it is made from concrete, it feels, looks and is as heavy as a real rock.  The only difference is, once you turn it over, there is a combination lock with a little safety compartment inside.  The combination lock is set to 0-0-0 when you first get it, and there are easy to follow instructions on how to set your own combination.  With 1000′s of possible codes, no ones RocLok will be the same. Once you have your security code in, and turn the dial, you then have to give a pretty good yank on the top of the lock to get the cover off, and then Viola, you have your key to get into your house.

The RocLok can also stand up to the elements.  We haven’t had the greatest summer here – it actually rained for 3 whole weeks straight.  I had the RocLok outside the whole time in the rain, and the safety compartment was totally dry inside.  I was so surprised with all the rain we had, that it hadn’t seeped through!  I haven’t been able to test this in the winter, but am looking forward to putting it to the test.  I’m pretty sure it will make out fine.

roclok2The RocLok is great for regular visitors that you don’t want to give out your keys to.  If you hand out a key to someone like a handyman, and then decide that you no longer want them at your house, you are not guaranteed that you will get your key back.  However, with the RocLok you can easily change the combination at anytime, so rather than change all the keys and locks to your house, just change the combination on your RocLoc.  It’s way easier, and much cheaper.

The RocLok is also great for kids. Rather than giving children a single key to their house that they have to keep in a pocket, on a string around their neck,  or in their backpack, you don’t have to worry about the key getting lost or misplaced.  As long as they can remember the combination, they will always be able to get into the house.  And if they forget a quick phone call to you will save time getting them in.

So, the RocLok is pretty cool, but now I want to tell you about another product!  It`s called the GeoRoc.  My husband has this hobby called Geo-caching – it`s kind of like treasure/scavenger hunting meets 21st century with a GPS.  It`s pretty fun.  The idea is this – someone hides a little log book in some obscure place, they take the the coordinates with their GPS and then tell other people the coordinates so they can go find it with their GPS.  When the hunter finds the log, they sign it to say they have found it.  What makes this game really interesting is that people hide the logs (cache)  in places that the average person would never even know is holding a cache.  This is where the GeoRoc comes in.  Because it looks just like a regular rock, the average person (aka Muggle) would walk right over the cache.  However, a geocacher knows that the cache is hidden really well so average person would not see it.  The more natural the cache is with the scene around it, the more difficult it would be for a geocacher to find, and the more fun it is for them.  Some caches are easy, others are really hard.  If you put this GeoRoc in among other rocks, it would be probably be a difficulty 4 to find (a really challenging one).

My husband wanted to use our RocLok as a cache, but I would not let him.  Although, since there is a combination on the RocLoc, this could add a whole new dimension to Geo-caching, the lock could be set to certain combination, and with some hints, the geocacher would have to figure out the combo – this makes for extra fun.

There is a combo lock and you get to set your own code. This would be great. We have been trying to figure out how to hide a key. We recently took a walk and there was a hole in my husbands pocket and the key fell out. Luckily we retraced our steps and found the key, but it got us to yhinking.

My best friend does Geo-Caching and it’s cool. I’ve gone with her, and sometimes they REALLY hide the item you’re looking for.

I watch the video and saw how strong the RocLok is. They say it is bulletproof.

My son goes Geo-caching. He loves it. He leaves little prizes for the next person there.
