Grobag – Egg Color Changing Room Thermometer – CLOSED

by Mommy on July 30, 2009

grobag

It’s hard to know how warm or cool to keep a bedroom while your child sleeps.  When DD first came home from the hospital, I tried to swaddle and wrap her up, and put the heat on as warm as I thought was reasonable.  Some mornings she would wake up with icicle hands and feet, while others they were clammy.  It was really hard to know where the temperature really was, and what was acceptable for a baby.

grobag1gifThankfully, there is a gadget that could have saved me all the stress of keeping DD warm or cool enough to sleep. Grobag makes a neat little egg that not only digitally displays the temperature, but also uses visual cues as well.  The Grobag egg has made nap and night time so much easier for all of us.  The Grobag changes 4 different colours.  Blue means too hot, yellow is the optimal level, orange is a little bit warm, and red is way too hot.  It is so easy to take a peek in her room and just look at the Grobag egg colour to make sure that the room is at the right temperature.  According to the Grobag instructions, the baby’s room should be at 61 – 67 degrees Fahrenheit (16 – 19 Celsius for my Canadian Readers).  I find the lower levels a little bit too cool for DD as she will wake up with cold hands, but at 67 she is fine when she wakes up in the morning.  The Grobag egg usually fluctuates from 67 – 71 degrees Fahrenheit during the evenings.  I know that these are reasonable temperatures for her to sleep in.  The only thing that the Grobag egg is missing is the ability to change the temperature to Celcius.

grobag2gifGrobag also makes baby sleeping bags and swaddling blankets for babies and toddlers.  These are also a very easy way to make sure your children stay nice and warm during those cool evenings.  Blankets are not suggested for babies when they sleep so a baby sleeping bag is way safer than a blanket.

I learned about room temperatures, and it makes me nervous knowing that hot rooms increase the risk of SIDS because it’s over 90 degrees in Seattle right now and we don’t have AC. It feels like an oven in my baby’s room, yikes!!

I would rather be too cold. Unfortunately, I live in Seattle where we’re having a massive heatwave, and it’s over 90 inside my condo. Hard to sleep!

That’s a tricky question for me to answer. Although it is usually easier to cuddle up with blankets to warm up than it is to cool down a hot room, if I get too cold, I have great difficulty warming up. So I guess I prefer slightly cool but I’d prefer hot to cold.

Swaddling helps your newborn to sleep undisturbed by preventing the ‘moro reflex’, which is the tendency for newborns to startle themselves by suddenly moving their arms

I didn’t know that SIDS was connected with room temperature (or that 61-67 was ideal).

I would much rather be too cold! Too hot is unbearable.

Carrie July 31, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I could have used that this week. We have had 100+ heat for 3 days and baby is not sleeping well. I assume she is to hot.

One thing I learned was that Room temperature is vital in creating a safe sleeping environment for your baby and should be maintained at 61-67°F

YIKES! No wonder she is not sleeping

Carrie July 31, 2009 at 4:54 pm

I would rather be too cold because then I could bundle up. There is nothing you can do about to hot.

Kelly July 31, 2009 at 6:39 pm

Also, I’d much rather be too cold than too hot, especially when it comes to sleeping (and especially during this pregnancy!).

I’d rather be too hot. Sleeping without a blanket freaks me out… always has. I feel insecure.

On the site, I like that they have parenting tips. For example, ‘positive parenting’ is invaluable. Nothing encourages good behavior like positive reinforcement. If you tell a kid they’re bad, then that’s what they will be.

I also want the Time Out Pad… like bad. And the Mommy Hook is just what I need. (But I could get something like that at Lowe’s.)

Carol Hamel August 1, 2009 at 5:56 am

Q. What does the tog rating mean?

A. The tog rating describes the warmth or “Thermal Resistance” of a product and is widely used in the UK to explain warmth levels of duvets. Grobag® baby sleeping bags are tog tested to conform to BS4745:1990. The latest advice from health professionals is that baby sleeping bags should be ‘lightweight’. This is why grobag® baby sleeping bags are 2.5 togs or less.

I learned that the grobag® egg™ glows yellow if the room temperature is within recommended guidelines (61-67°F). If the room temperature is outside this range, the grobag® egg™ acts as a visual reminder for you to take action to cool or heat the room, or to adjust the baby’s bedding or clothing.
