Big Bug Lunch – Big Bug Lunch Book – CLOSED

by Mommy on July 20, 2009

big-bug-lunch

The summer is finally here! With it, we can count on the multitude of insects arriving as well. As much as we may try to deny it, we’ve all eaten bugs. Skaie Knox’ book Big Bug Lunch! is the adventurous tale of “Matty” and his dog “Klunkers”. Big Bug Lunch! explores the question “Have you ever eaten a bug? Or when you think about it, do you say uhhggg”?

Written for boys and girls, Big Bug Lunch! is the first in a series of 10 called”the Klunker Kapers” and it is everything a great children’s book should be.

Beautifully illustrated by Mike Gatti, Big Bug Lunch! has amazing artwork that very clearly illustrates the story; the text is quite large and is surrounded by lots of white space.  The opposing page is filled with brightly colored characters and bugs and as a classic book worm, I read this delightful book to my 5 month old several times and we both really enjoyed it.

big-bug-lunch1Big Bug Lunch! is great for little hands to hold. Iit measures approximately 11 inches across and almost 9 inches down, it’s also easy to read, has amazing artwork and an amusing storyline. With rhyme and repetition such as “Worms in your tummy how they wiggle! When you eat  ‘em you will surely giggle!”, what’s not to like?

As an added bonus, the book comes with a music CD. The first song is the musical version of Big Bug Lunch! and the CD has 13 other fun tracks; a mix of original songs,  a classic Australian folk tune, karaoke, and a narration of the book.particularly and classics. I particularity liked track 6, it’s the perfect bedtime song with the lyrics “ Hush baby dream, close your eyes, the stars have fallen asleep tonight”.

The writer behind Big Bug Lunch! is Skaie Knox, a multi talented artist. With a full career as a professional singer/songwriter , Big Bug Lunch! is her first book. With a passion for dogs, Skaie plans to create a foundation to fund K-9 rescue organizations throughout the U.S.A.

My favorite bug to eat have got to be jelly worms. What can I say – I’m squeamish about the real things!

I learned that this is her first book in a series of ten.

Heather July 20, 2009 at 9:38 pm

I think its funny that she started writing the book on a Reader’s Digest…who gets those anymore these days anyways?!?!

Shanna July 20, 2009 at 9:38 pm

I learned that Skaie is pretty busy with live performances! It’s a shame she only performs in California, because I’m pretty sure she would be terrific for the summer reading program at my local library here in Tennessee…

Skaie is passionate about dogs and plans to create a foundation to fund K-9 rescue organizations throughout the U.S.A. “Klunkers”, the narrator of this book, was rescued through “Mutts & Moms” (www.muttsandmoms.org) a non-profit organization that visits LA & Kern County shelters and rescues dogs that just had puppies and those that may need medical care to heal from previous illnesses or injuries.

I once ate a chocolate covered cricket from the county fair..when I bought it I was disappointed because the sign said “Chocolate Covered Crickets $5.00.” I expected to get a bag or small box of them to munch on while I walked around, but after handing over my cash, I was handed one chocolate disc with a cricket in the middle. It was good and crunchy, but nothing exceptional – It is still the only bug I can recall eating so I guess that makes it my favorite.
