Summer is finally here. After being cooped up in the house all winter long, DD and I are so happy to be out and about in the sun, at the pool, and shortly at the beach! Like I have mentioned before, I love the beach, but with a little baby it is very nerve wracking making sure she stays out of the sun. Sunsmarty, a bathing suit company for kids located in Toronto, Ontario, specializes in protective swimwear for children that is not only functional, but also fun! Sunsmarty‘s swimwear starts at size 0 and goes all the way up to age 18! All the swimsuits are made from a material that is 50 ++SPF UVA & UVB blocking fabric, that is lightweight, 4 way stretch and dries quickly in the sun. There is no better way to protect yourself from the sun, than to cover up your body.

sunsmart2 Sunsmarty sent me a a one piece pink flowers swimsuit for DD in a size 12 months. This darling swimsuit has cute little ruffles around the 3/4 length sleeves and the legs. The swimsuit has a zipper in the back making it pretty easy to put on and and also has a zipper between the legs which makes diaper changing a breeze. Since it’s not quite warm enough to go to the beach yet, I tested the Sunsmarty suit at the pool. The very first day I put DD in the pool with this suit, I must have had at least 5 people ask me about it. Everyone thinks it is just the smartest idea for a little baby (or a child) to be as fully protected as possible from the sun. I also felt like a very responsible parent with DD in this swimsuit. DD is currently 10 months old, and the suit fits her pretty good with a little bit of growing room -she is currently 22 pounds. I use a cloth swimming diaper as well, so her bottom is a little more bulky than if I used a Little Swimmer. This suit will definitely fit her for the rest of this swimming season.

I also received a Terry long sleeve hoodie from Sunsmarty for DD to test out. This makes after pool time really easy. DD is so squirmy that it’s hard to get a towel around her to dry her off, with the terry hoodie, all I have to do is slip it over her head and the terry cloth does the rest. It also means that I don’t have to bring an extra towel to the pool, so less items for me to drag around the better. The terry hoodie isn’t too too thick, but it does its job. It also looks cute too after pool time.

Sunsmarty has some adorable swim outfits for both girls and boys, but this is one of those times where the boy items are way more cool than the girls one – they have Superman swimsuits complete with a cape and matching hat! Kathryn June 18, 2009 at 10:10 am: Though I know it’s against the popular opinion, I don’t really take sun precations. There have been studies that show chemical sunscreens, while very mildly carcinogenic initially, become thousands of times more carcinogenic when exposed to…sunlight! After reading the studies, it occurred to me that it wasn’t until after the introduction of chemical sunscreens that skin cancer rates started making such a dramatic increase. The companies then used the ozone layer issue to their advantage, and turned the cancer increase into a promotional to sell more…sunscreen!

I’m lucky enough to come from a line of darker-skinned, easy tanning folks. But I know not everyone is. Companies like Sunsmarty are just wonderful because they offer a method of sun protection that doesn’t involve smearing a strange chemical compound onto the pourous largest organ of the human body.

And when that’s not enough, there are, thankfully, some great natural products out there. For ourselves, and especially for our children, they’re just the safest way to go!

Aura June 18, 2009 at 4:27 pm: I actually tore the article that featured the Superman UV 1 piece plus towel cape from the 2009 parents magazine, planning on buying it for my son. My son is always embarrassed to be the only child in camp wearing a watersuit but this one is adorable and I’m sure he wouldn’t have a problem wearing it. The two piece is even better making bathroom trips a whole lot easier
Aura June 18, 2009 at 4:29 pm: With a cardiac kid we were warned to keep the kids in water suits when swimming to help them control their temperature. One pieces are such a pain for diaper changes and 2 pieces are very hard to find. We also use wide brimmed hats and are very vigilant with sunscreen. Our stroller all have extender shades and when going out for long periods of time I try to dress my kids in longer sleeves and pants to protect their skin.

Keith Wilcox June 19, 2009 at 2:01 pm: I grew up in southern California, and as an adult now I’ve paid the consequences of spending so long playing in the sun without protection. Back in the 70′s there wasn’t much concern so we played at the beach almost all day every day without any kind of sun screen, not even a hat. This swim suits are a very good idea, although all other measurements, like sunscreen every 2 hours, wearing hats, and being outside later in the afternoon rather than the middle of the day, should also be included. My boys would definitely go for the Superman one!

Brandy June 21, 2009 at 10:29 am: I personally don’t take precautions from the sun for myself, I put oil on my skin when I am out – dark tanning oil, but with my children I am all about UV sunglasses, and SPF 50 plus sun block. My middle child has very olive skin and doesn’t burn, my oldest & youngest {a baby} are very light complected and will burn easily. So to keep them from burning and to help all three children not be affected by the risk of too much UV rays, I place sunblock and hats on them when out in sun!
