Naturepedic – Organic Mattress – CLOSED

by Mommy on June 26, 2009

naturepedic

I do like to know that I am taking care of the environment and using products that are safe for myself and my family.  I cloth diaper, carpool, bring reusable bags to the grocery store and try to use natural products as much as possible.  I don’t have a vegetable garden or anything, but I try my best to make this world a better place for my daughter, and I also want to make sure the items she uses are good for her.  One place that my daughter spends a lot of time in is her crib.  An organic mattress is something that I feel is very important for DD to be sleeping on.

naturepedic1gifNaturepedic makes organic crib mattresses that can also be used later as a toddler bed.  I received the No-compromise Dual Firmness Ultra Crib and Toddler Mattress for review.  This Naturepedic mattress has an impressive list of bonus’ as well which I will discuss after all the organic aspects.  Most crib mattresses are made from vinyl/PVC and polyurethane foam which are known to release chemicals with use and time.  The Naturepedic is made from an organic cotton so all the harmful PVC and vinyl parts are eliminated in the production of the mattress.  The filling of the mattress is also organic cotton.  To be considered organic cotton it must be unbleached, undyed, and grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers.  The outside of the mattress is  made with a 100% polyethylene waterproof covering. Polyethylene is a plastic, however is environmentally friendly and is used used in the food packaging industry because of its purity and non-toxic properties.   The Naturepedic mattress is also hypoallergenic, there is a Dust Mite Barrier Cover, and because the mattress is not made with any wool or latex there is no need to worry that your child may be allergic to their mattress – these are both very high allergy materials.

On top of being a 100% organic product the Naturepedic also has some other great aspects.  The mattress has two sides, both with a different firmness.  The firmer side is meant for babies, while the softer side is for toddlers.  As your child grows up, you just have to turn over your mattress.  The mattress also has a very firm support and orthopedic innerspring.  The support system is in accordance with the pediatrician and Consumer Product Safety Commission firmness recommendations. The  mattress has a  total of 252 Coils, and there is also additional AirCore ™ support for the infant side. The Naturepedic mattress is also meets and exceeds fire protection regulations.  Also because the mattress is made from cotton, it is slower to catch fire and does not release harmful and potentially deadly fumes.  The Naturepedic mattress also comes with a lifetime warranty, and a 30 day money back guarantee.  Phew, I think I got most of it, but there are still some more features on the website that are unique to this great Naturepedic mattress.

I wish I were able to test out the Naturepedic mattress myself so I could tell you all the difference it has made in my sleeping, however it is DD who sleeps on it every night.  I can tell you that it fits perfectly into her crib, and I am very happy that I can use this for a toddler bed in the future as well.  I like that there are two different sides for when DD is a little older and needs a softer mattress.  The mattress almost sounds like it would look like it’s organic too, just not like a “normal” mattress.  I can tell you all, this looks and feels like a normal crib mattress it just has all the wonderful aspects of being organic. DD sleeps like a baby in it (sleeps for 5 minutes then wakes up crying – just joking).  She will sleep all night with usually only 1 wake up for a quick drink.

naturepedic2I feel great about knowing that DD is sleeping on an environmentally friendly product.  She spends over 1/2 her day there, so I like knowing that she is not surrounded by harmful chemicals or toxins.  Naturepedic has organic mattresses in twin, full and queen sizes, and also has organic bedding which includes mattress pads and sheets.  They also carry other organic baby products such as changing pads bassinets and cradles.

I learned that Natural cotton is grown conventionally but is not processed with harsh chemicals (such as chlorine bleach and various dyes). Organic cotton is not only unbleached and undyed, but is also grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. It provides a completely natural and chemical-free filling material. Now I know the difference.

I am very interested in The No-Compromise™ Organic Waterproof Mattress Pad found on the website. All of the pads I’ve had in the past, even though promoted as “breathable,” never worked well. Who wants a sweaty back (or a sweaty husband!)??

Most of what I learned on the site I also read first in your excellent review! But one interesting fact they mention is to not trust the advertised “coil count” in mattresses.

From the Naturepedic site…”Beware of advertisements for “coil count.” This figure does not give the actual number of coils in the mattress, but rather the number of coils in an equivalent full size mattress. “

ORGANIC MATTRESS PADS
I have to use mattress pads on our memory foam matresses.
I like the idea of organic materials on the bed.

littlepurpleroom June 29, 2009 at 12:41 am

We built our house out of mostly salvages maerials. we have a 18 barrel
rainwater catch system. We grow some of our food in a 12×24 hothouse. We have a compost toilet and a hand dug well and use a Big Berkey water filter.
We try to not be big time consumers of frivolous items, but choose to upcycle and recycle.

On Naturepedic’s site I learned about Pthalates and how they can affect male reproductive systems. As the mommy of a little boy that obviously is a concern! I wonder how using a second hand mattress would compare to a new one, perhaps the dangerous chemicals would have dissipated into the air after some time? In any case it would be lovely to have one of these healthier alternative mattresses for our #2!

Karen Mead June 29, 2009 at 9:11 am

Naturepedic products go above and beyond the CPSC ban by eliminating many other questionable chemicals from baby crib mattresses.

I bring my own bags when shopping, I carpool whenever possible, I keep the thermostat down in winter, I always try to buy used first (with obvious exceptions of things that can’t/shouldn’t be bought used). I reuse the backside of printed paper for notes and such. I probably do other thing but can’t think of them right now.

I am shocked to read all of the potential illness and side effects that can be caused by the chemicals found in mattresses! I am more shocked and disturbed that there are not laws banning the production of mattresses that ar FULL of chemicals!

I really want the 2 in 1 ORGANIC COTTON ULTRA Baby Crib & Toddler Mattress. As well as the contour changing pad and cover.

Darci July 5, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Having 2 toddlers, the No-Compromise Organic Waterproof Pads sound very appealing to me!

Darci July 5, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Some of the environmentally friendly things we do in our home is:
recycle
try to use mostly environmentally friendly, petroleum free soaps and cleaners
buy organic or local produce as much as possible.

Penelope July 5, 2009 at 10:17 pm

For the environment- I buy organic, I buy locally, I carpool, I recycle, I buy non bleached cotton, I don’t use aerosol anything, or even toxic anything (my cleaners are all natural).

I love their products and would love to win this as we are having a baby boy in August and need a safe mattress and I have not seen any in the stores, so this would be an answer to prayers!
I see they also sell twin, full and queen size mattresses and they say they are :”The Quilted Organic Cotton Deluxe Mattress is the most luxurious natural organic mattress available. It is firm, fire-safe, and eliminates harmful chemicals from you and your child’s sleeping environment. It will provide you with a more natural, healthy and comfortable sleep.” This sounds perfect!

Environmentally friendly things we do – recycle, love that Calgary finally got blue cart pickups as taking everything to Cochrane was getting time consuming. And we compost. I also cloth diaper my girls.

I am really happy to see that as of February 10, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) banned the manufacture of child care articles and toys containing phthalates. I was unaware that there was such a proactive stance being taken from the perspective of those in a place to make change happen!

I would love to give my baby(arriving in August!) the greatest opportunity to be healthy-free from exposure to chemicals known to affect a child’s developing endocrine (hormonal) system, and which may cause asthma, allergies and even cancer.

As I have been mattress shopping, this comes at a price! It would be easier on our family budget to entertain the cost of a less safe mattress, but it would also be not in our best interest as parents to have the toxins in our home, or for our baby.

In the last few weeks, due to the recession, I have lost my job-or as they say, my position has been “deleted”. This has put added stress on our family.

That said, providing our child with the best mattress solution possible, through this contest, would be an amazing opportunity to create and optimize a healthy home and nursery environment. Also, that it would come for us at a time when it would truly be appreciated.

Thanks to both My Mom’s View and Naturepedic for the opportunity to enter this contest!

Cheers
Jenn

I’ve gotten really good at recycling. We drink a lot of soda in our house and before we just threw out all of the cans. Now we recycle all of the cans and bottles our soda comes in and we reduce our trash load by a significant amount.

Dillon July 7, 2009 at 7:12 pm

My “green” thing is I try and buy produce from local farmer’s markets. Not only do we get a lot better quality produce but it saves on the environmental impact of transporting it and we support the local growers.

Greg July 7, 2009 at 11:39 pm

I really cut back on my electricity use. I unplug all of my appliances when I’m not using them and keep lights off and the air conditioning instead of having it at 70 degrees we keep it at 74. All of this has made a huge impact on our electricity use and has really helped our bill.

Dan July 7, 2009 at 11:58 pm
