Harold Conrad – Review & Giveaway – CLOSED

by Mommy on April 11, 2009

As I am getting older, I am really starting to lose my memory.  Maybe it’s having a baby, and having a million and one things to think about all at once. Either way, I do not have the memory that I once had.  Maybe once I get back to work and have to put my mind back to work, my memory will come back, until that time, I can just sit back and admire those who do have a memory. Harold Conrad is one of those people!  He has a memory like no other I have seen before.  I can not remember what I had for breakfast – or even lunch for that matter, but Harold Conrad is able to remember childhood memories and the put them to paper in great detail.

Harold Conrad just realized his amazing talent of painting in the past few years.  Now he is unable to put his paint brush, and tools down!  Harold creates scenes from around Nova Scotia of places that he has seen while growing up, and in other cases, he makes up some beautiful scenery in his mind, and transfer them to canvas.  For those who know me, I can barely draw a stick person, so to see someone so talented who can create a beautiful scene like Harold does, I have 2 reasons to be jealous! 1. He has a memory and 2. He can paint.

I met with Harold and his wife Marjorie on a Friday afternoon to go through all his masterpieces.  Harold himself is a very quite man, and his wife is an upbeat woman who is more than proud to boast about her husbands amazing work!  Marjorie is right - Harold’s work is amazing.  There were so many great choices of art work, that I had a very difficult time trying to pick just one, but ended up settling on Morning Glory.

harold

It is so difficult to get a good photo of art over the Internet.  You just can’t see the texture and real colours that are used to create this.  This is an acrylic painting, so it’s not only made with a paint brush, but also a knife, all the rocks on the right hand side are raised, and bumpy just like real rocks.  The water falling down the waterfall has waves that are raised.  In the photograph, these great details are not captured, so you really miss how incredibly detailed this work of art is.

This piece really caught my eye because of the sunset and the white clouds that are just about out of view on the right hand side (uh,, again, you just can’t see it for it’s true beauty over the Internet – you will have to take my word for it). Most of Harold’s work is scenic photos from around the Guysborough area of Nova Scotia where Harold grew up.   This piece is 9 x 12, but Harold Conrad has a number of different sizes of art.  His larger pieces are 16 x 20, and he also has some smaller pieces at 7 x 9, so there is a little something for everyone.

In this drawing, I can just see myself watching the sun set just beyond the ocean.  I hope everyone who reads this blog has had the opportunity to experience a sunset along the ocean.  There is no other sunset that is as beautiful.  The sky and the water all change colour during a sunset, just like Harold has captured.  I love just to stare at this work of art and imagine I was there able to experience that sun set.

harold2

Another piece that really caught my eye was “Fond Memories” this is a photo of  Harold’s old homestead that is now no longer there.  He drew this picture straight from memory.  Upon showing this picture to an elder in the community she wept to see her old community the way it was.  Can you imagine being able to put your memories down into picture so well that it brings other to tears?  This is a talent that goes beyond just drawing.  It’s about creating a feeling.  Many people can draw, but not everyone can capture the feelings that are inside the pictures.  Harold has the ability to do this, as he has done for the elder in his old community.

All Harold’s work is protected by an acid free plastic slip cover and is signed by Harold.  He makes each piece special, and with a lot of thought.  In one of his pieces, his name was signed in all different colours.  His granddaughter was with him while he was painting, and she asked if he would put his name colourful, so he did.  Don’t you just love Grandpa’s and what they will do for their grand-kids?  This is just the type of person Harold Conrad is.  Just by meeting him for a few minutes, I could see how genuine and passionate Harold is.

Harold and Marjorie were a delight to meet, and I was so impressed with Harold’s ability to create some fantastic art work.  If you are looking to add a little touch of class and an original art piece to add to your home, you will be very pleased with your art piece from Harold Conrad.  This piece stands out in my house, and I get numerous comments on how it really gives a warm feeling to a room. For original acrylic paintings, Harold’s work is very affordable!

My favorite painting is called “Where Eagles Fly” because it reminds me of my parent’s place in Central Oregon. They have a home that sits just above the Deschutes River. In fact, they have the only property that has access to the river. Lots of pine trees and Eagles flying high above. It’s just a piece of Heaven:)

I like Net Fishing. Thanks for the giveaway~

My favorite is the net fishing. I looked at several of the paintings but kept coming back to that one. The blending of the colors for the water is so soothing and relaxing.
